Integration of WTF, ITF Discussed in Lausanne
Taekwondo Leaders of 2 Koreas Meet with IOC Head

Dr. Choue Chungwon
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (June 3, 2005) – Dr. Chungwon Choue, president of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), and Mr. Ung Chang, the North Korean member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and president of the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), met at the IOC headquarters here today to exchange opinions on how to develop taekwondo.
Dr. Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, also attended the meeting. It was the third meeting for Choue and Chang, after two rounds of talks during the Athens Olympics Games in August 2004.

Both parties shared the view that there is a long way to go before full-pledged integration between the WTF and the ITF is possible; nonetheless, they stressed the importance of continued dialogue between the two global taekwondo bodies.

ITF President Chang Ung

Prior to full-fledged WTF-ITF talks for possible taekwondo intergration, Choue and Chang shared the view that technical and administrative matters should be thoroughly and cautiously discussed over time, given the two taekwondo bodies' differences in poomsae and competition rules.

In regard to technical and administrative matters, as well as other fundamental matters related to the possible integration of the two taekwondo bodies, Choue proposed creating a working committee comprising representatives from the WTF and the ITF. President Rogge pledged his full support for the idea.

IOC President Jacques Rogge

Choue said that he would call an Executive Council Meeting of the WTF as early as possible for final decision of the concerned issues, including the proposed formation of the working committee.

Rogge expressed his strong support for the ongoing dialogue for the development of the WTF and the ITF.

I hope the others ITF join too with ATA and others organizations. But I Also hope that the WTF can adapt too using the hands in the tornaments.

Aren't both the ITF and WTF on pretty shaky ground right now, with the ITF splintering and the WTF leadership scandals? I think they've both got a long way to go with their own internal problems before they could possibly come together with any coherence.

Maybe someday, but I doubt soon. There are some VERY deep-seated differences between the groups and the people involved.

I agree. I think you are talking two different styles that happen to have the same name. Won't work.

Dear All,

One word.....PROPOGANDA!

Amen to that. I agree completely.

Just an after-thought:
What would happen to all Dans already certified by WTF or ITF? Would previous certification become null and void?

Probably... and you'd have to pay skip dan fees...

At any rate, it would be very interesting to see what happens...

Total propaganda, I'm not WTF and never will be, I use my hands. :bandit: Besides that, the President of the ITF is Master Trân Triêu Quân (http://www.tkd-itf.org/RessBoard.htm) , not Chang Ung , USA President is Grand Master Van Binh, IX Dan

You need to check your sources Master Lugo.

 No doubt.

Jack,
It's just the Olympic sparring ..... and you would be amazed at how many WTF practitioners don't gel with Olympic Sparring. I'm one of them. :D

Hands are important to us too. :)

Dear All,

To those that have commented...is there really an ITF? Personally, I feel the ITF as I new it died in 2002 with the passing of the General!

I do however know, based on the General's own words, that TKD will live on...

I AM TAEKWON-DO!

I think Mike is right. Officially there is supposed to be an ITF but with Choi's passing the group has suffered a horrific power struggle resulting in a good deal of splintering.

Other than this, even if it were to take place, it is WAY too early in the process to make such a statement. The ITF and WTF have tried for years to cohesively gel. I think the same problems would still exist... what forms, sparring, uniforms and so forth. It would be akin to founding the world apples and oranges federation.

Of course there is a strong political component involved here... TKD is coming up for review and they don't think that it will continue to be an Olympic sport after that review. I'm not surprised either... TKD in the US has violated the Federal Sports Act and even under USAT, continues to do so. How? How many soccer players, ice skaters, power lifters and so forth have have to pay an organization outside their country to compete? They are not supposed to have to do so, and yet TKD players must.
