Okay everyone's heard it before.
Be careful when you rough house.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurts.
My husband and I wrestle around, and if anyone gets hurt it will be him. A fat lip or a kick to the groin, maybe a black eye. All accidently mind you. Now I have been trying to talk him into doing bjj with me. He recently saw this clip of Marcelo Garcio fighting. And it reminded him of how much he enjoyed wrestling in high school, and now he is all aboard the bjj train.
So when we were wrestling, all of a sudden he gets me in an armbar and POP!! I didn't even know he knew how to do that, and my arm was screaming in agreement. My arm was paralyzed for several minutes, and my mouth was hanging open for several more. I was so flabbergasted that he did that. I'm okay now, I hope. Do you think it will be worse in the morning? Maybe he's a little too excited about getting started in bjj. He was so contrite in his apology, I felt sorry for him. Just wanted to hear similiar stories, or do you not even wrestle around with SO?

Hmm, pops are bad. You may have to get that checked out by a doc. Ice it, all night. Take an anti-inflammatory pain killer. That's all the advice I can offer.

Sounds like a dislocation to me. Consult your orthopedist tomorrow, and by all means keep it iced as much as possible between now and then. Does the arm still hurt now? Is your range of motion impaired, and is there any swelling?

I have been doing jujutsu for almost five years now, and my wife simply will not wrassle with me any more. I have the control to ensure that she is not hurt, but she gets nowhere when she tries to get me. Too frustrating to be fun for her, and I am too much of a Type-A *** to let her win. More's the pity.

Thanks for the inquiries. My elbow is doing good. It still hurts sometimes when I try and extend it. Feels like there is extra space in there. I have a monster bruise in a variety of colors on my arm. Keeping a watch on how my elbow is doing, if I must I will make a visit to the doctor. But it seems to be doing pretty well.
So really no one has sent their loved one to the doctor?
No more wrestling with the hubby for a while for me.

You know, it might be a tendon out of place. you mentioned an extra space? do you mean on the surface there's a weird grove or dent that you can feel with the other hand? or that's just the sensation on the inside of the joint?
If it's not better in a day or two, I'd still get it looked at.
Feel better!

Probably wouldn't make much of a difference... except possibly in the final outcome of the wrestling.
I was just being a dirty dog.
Hope I didn't offend anyone, was just trying to be funny.

Part of armbarring is learning some finesse. You probably hyper-extended it some. That pop sounds like soft tissue tearing and I bet the joint is filled with fluid. That fluid is why you feel extra space. It's the body's reaction to trauma to stabilize a wound in the short-term. It hinders longer-term healing, though.

Go to the doctor NOW if you haven't already. Make sure that s/he understands the motion was both hyper-extensive (bending joint backwards) AND had a pulling, separating component to it, AND that it was done by a 180-220 pound body (whatever he weighs) that denied you the chance to instinctively pull your arm back when it popped.

I hope you don't wind up with the elbow problem I got, though mine was due to falling and landing funny, not hyper-extension.

Also, after the doc takes a look, you should take 800mg ibuprofin 3x/day not exceeding 2400 mg per day. No booze - your liver will have its hands full with the ibuprofin (do livers have hands?)

You're honestly and legitimately injured and need to take care of your healing as such.

But you'll most likely heal up just fine.

And when you're teaching your hubby (or anyone) about armbars, teach them to emphasize the positioning, balance, and timing, so they are safe with the move. It can be very dangerous, especially for beginners.

Hope you feel better.

Arm bars should be "set" quickly and "applied" slowly. In juji-gatame, control and extend arm quickly, don't take it past normal ROM. Then slowly apply pressure so uki has time to tap.

Sorry- this is one of my mantras when I teach armlocks.

Hope you heal OK.

Peace
