Anyone else competing in this tourney? It is August 13-14 in Torrance. Thirty minute time limit for each match, winner by submission or whoever get's to 12 points first.

I'm not, but a few people from my school are going to make the trip. I like the different scoring system though.
I don't really trust anything to do with the IGJJF.
Rorion and the Torrance academy seem to intentionally hold back their students with things like that triangle-begging 'The Gracie Gift' guard pass.
I wouldn't trust any of their rules, the coin toss thing is stupid (or did they only do that with Marc Laimon, when Rorion lost his temper and started swearing at everyone?). There seems to be no other reason for the IGJJF, other than to isolate Rorion's students and hold them back while he trains his own family to always have the one up. It's a load and it's sad.
I think Konstantine from Ralph Gracie Jiu Jitsu is going. He's a tall, ugly, Russian dude who has busted almost every finger I've got. He'll be in the 207 lbs. weight class if he can make weight.
Really nice guy, though. A privilege to know and train with.

Man, some very harsh feelings inside of you aren't there? I tell you what, I just competed in that tournament and LOVED it!!!!!!! I took silver in my weight class, had ZERO problems with the rules, and consider it one of the best run tournaments I've been to so far. In fact I even talked with Rorion in the locker room after my match, he was very cool, as always. How in does that tournament isolate his students? I don't understand how you came to that conclusion at all. Rorion does not hold anybody back, him, like the other Gracie's make you work for your belt, won't see any four year blackbelts under those guys. Rorion has numerous brown belts, one being Lars Wallin who is a flat out stud, tell him about being held back. Furthermore that guard pass you are talking about is dependable, you just have to be smart about when and how you use it. You know for all the talk about the Gracie's, they've always been cool to me. If you've had another experience, then that unfortunate.
Hi Luciano - did you notice the white belt division at 207 lbs a big Russian dude? He took first this past weekend but he busted his knee.
He also went in the unlimited class (?) but did not take first.

Well I did notice a guy who fits the description, but not sure. Did he compete in the white belt open class? We had a guy name Mike Robles compete in the white 221 and below, who took his division and fourth in the open division. Man there were some tough guys at this tourney, real solid jiu-jitsu was going on. You competing soon Erik? What weight? We might have to meetup on the mat sometime. :D

My friend, Jason Ebarb, took second in one of the brown belt divisions. He lost to Brandon Vera in a twenty minute match.

I've been itching to compete as soon as I go down a weight class. I've been getting thicker and thicker and thicker despite dieting and working my butt off.
I'm scared of the other 215 lb guys!
On the lighter side (forgive the bad pun), I'm getting more and more muscular, though that was not the goal.
Hmmm, Konstantine apparently took his division (white belt, 30 years old or so, 207 lbs, whatever division that is), and won one by loop choke in the open category and lost by points to an indian who did some sort of dance before the match (according to Konstantine). Apparently, the guy took first and fought his heart out. My buddy really respected him.
Was this the same tourney?
Congrats to your guy, regardless!
Yours, too, Cliff!

Is your friend tall, brown hair, kind of a semi-military hair style? If it is him he footlocked some guy big time, pretty cool to watch. Man I can only dream of being a brown belt someday. :D

Yes, know what you mean Erik. This was the first comp I've been in where I fought under the unlimited weight class. See I'm screwed for tournaments really. If I just do jiu-jitsu, don't do trainforstrength.com and cycling workouts, let alone eat chicken salads and watermelon all the time, I'll naturally hit 230 easy. I tried competing at that weight class and was simply too small, most those guys are MONSTERS!!!!!!! So for this one I cut weight big time, did the above mentioned workout, and got to a svelte 215 with the gi on. I felt great at this weight class!!!!!!! Now I just have to keep working my *** off, since I really believe getting my purple might mean putting it on the line in tourney action.

This is him on the left, his brother Randall on the right.

Guard slams are legal under IGJJF rules, right?
