Hello everyone I have a question about these two styles of Karate; KyuKoshin and Shotokan.

My first question what are the differences between Kyukoshin and Shotokan Karate?

My other question is which style of Karate has more techniques mainly aimed at street fighting/self defense?

I do Shotokan but it is not a traditional one I go to, 70% of the class is aimed at self defense. However my friend does traditional Shotokan and has won medals in competitions, one even recetly in Malta, but is pretty bad at street fighting (aka self defense on the streets in the UK). I have never meet or seen a Kyukoshin class so I was wondering about it and would like to know more.

Regards,
J.

Kyukushin = Shotokan and Goju combo with lots of full contact sparring.

Apparently, Kyokushin is a very non-mcdojo style. Many practitioners who fight in NHB competitions seem to do well. Karate often gets a bad rep in the MMA community, but Kyokushin is very "school of hard knocks", like muay thai.

Actually many MMA guys have a lot of respect for Kyokushin especially when they see fighters like Georges St. Pierre who's stand up striking style is kyokushin

Mas Oyama (founder of Kyokushin) was also influenced by Chinese arts and Muay Thai.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Is Kyokushin popular in America?, because it does not seem to be too popular in England neither is BJJ for some strange reasons.

Not really, most people arent willing to train like that.

Kyokushin has had several break offs.
Ashihara
Enshin (Sabaki Challenge)
Seido
Are all Kyokushin break offs.
