Hi,

I've just moved back to Portland, OR after living in Korea for the last 3 years. While I was in Korea I had the priviledge of studying hapkido and earning my 1st Dan black belt with the KHF. I am looking for somewhere locally where I can continue my studies, hopefully somewhere that will complement what I've already learned and maybe even recognize my belt. But quite frankly, with the multitude of different hapkido federations, organizations and associations that seem to exist Stateside, I'm a little confused.

Can anybody recommend a decent school, with a good reputation, near me? I live in Southwest Portland to be exact.

many thanks,

Joel

Joel,

I tried to locate a commercial KHF style school for you but was unable to find anything. The University of Oregon has a Hapkido Course... you may want to contact the schools athletic department and see who is teaching the class. I know it’s a bit far for you but the instructor may know of a qualified teacher in your area or perhaps a Hapkido study group that is in the Portland Area.

What Kwan did you study with in Korea? You may want to make contact a fellow kwan member in another city to get some info on who is in your area.

Also, drop Hal Whalen (KHF 7th Dan) an e-mail. He is the KHF director for the Boston Branch, he may know of someone in your area. Good Luck!!!

Hal’s e-mail is whalen@mudoacademy.com

Joel, my brother-in-law does Hapkido at Benneton's or something like that. They're a pretty good group, I hear. He's quite pleased with them.

I'll try to find out the name and website for you.

I studied with Bi Cheon Kwan, which is a pretty small Kwan confined to Taegu and Ulsan in South Korea. I doubt there are any members in the US, save for myself and my colleague who now lives in N. Carolina.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Please keep them coming!

Erik, who is your brother in law?
Hi Ron,

He's also named Eric (but spells it funny, as you can tell). :D Very nice guy, but often somehow misunderstood.

Feel free to give him a friendly kick in the butt for me next time you see him. I think he's injured at the moment from work, but he'll be back soon.

Joel-

That's Barringer's Martial Arts on 162nd and Division. I met him a couple of years ago. He seemed like a nice kid.

That, by the way, is the sound of hell freezing over. I just posted in the Korean Arts forum.
