View Full Version : Elastic or Drawstring?

I've always worn elastic gi pants, but it seems that all the good uniforms I think about buying come with the plain drawstring pants. Is there some reason for this besides "tradition"? Because no matter how tightly I tie drawstring pants, I get shucked on the ground. The crinkled top of my elastic pants seems to add enough friction to prevent that. Am I missing something?

heres what I do.....

for me all drawstring gi pants have been the best, i hate elastic pant so i take to drawstring out of them.....take about a three foot length of surgical rubber, using a straightened clothes hanger i run each end of the rubber through the loops where the drawstrings were, put them on, tie a knot at where you feel comfortable and cut the ends off......BAM!

That's actually a really good idea. Of course, if the rubber ever breaks you're gonna be naked really quick. How long does it usually hold up? Do you do much groundwork like that? I just started Judo and we do a good amount of ne waza, which is where I am having problems with my el cheapo drawstring judogi pants.

i have one pair thats been going on 6-7 years now, i swear. everything from sparring to grappling, whatever. i have never had a problem plus surgical rubber is way stronger than elastic or the drawstrings.

First night of judo tonight. Without my drawstring, the whole class would have discovered I was wearing Super Mario boxers.

drawstring. I feel safer using drawstring pants. Except that sometimes they're difficult to get out of after practice when they're sweaty.

Elastic.

Drawstrings have come undone on me... broken or sometimes I lose them in the waist of the pant and spend 1/2 the class trying to feed them back through.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I guess I should have specified that my elastic pants do still have a string, but I didn't know they made them any other way. The two things I don't like about pants with just a drawstring are 1) if it comes untied, there is nothing to hold them up, and 2) the crinkled waistband of my drawstring pants helps them grip my waist for a little added friction against shucking. So what I don't understand is, is there some advantage to leaving the elastic out when the pants could have had both? I'm sure there is a good reason for it, since nearly all the nice gis have plain drawstring pants, but after a night in my new judo gi, I just don't get it.

I take the string out of my elastic waists.

With pants it's ok, if you're doing Scottish Martial Arts and grappling in kilts it is forbidden though.

Is the drawstring installed properly? Don't laugh. I just bought two gis for my sons last year. Upon delivery, the drawstrings were installed wrong. They need to encircle the pants completely, go around again and then come out, sometimes they simple go in one side and come out the other, this will not work!

Peace

Yeah, it's installed right. They slip down though, no matter how tight I tie it.
