Anyone have any drills or exercises that you like to do for BJJ? Most drills we do are with partners and I am looking for solo practice type stuff. Movement drills would be especially appreciated.

Shrimp across a room
shoot across a room
dive roll across a room alternating shoulders
walk on your hands - if you fall try to fall forward and roll out of it

Shadow wrestle
Back Bridges
From your back (guard) sit up and shoot

I read an article the other day, I forgot who the bb was, but iterated that your gym workouts should mirror and focus on movements used on the mats, balance, twisting, resistance, some power stuff. I dont know if that helps. Ive been trying to increase that in my off mat workouts.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Shooting, shrimping and rolling are some of the fundamental movements of BJJ and you CAN NOT practice them too much.

If you want to feel the burn, do some bear crawls (walk around on all fours without letting your knees touch the ground).

What's involved in a "shoot"?

Get into a wrestling stance. This involves; spread your feet shoulder width apart, move your dominant foot foward till it's heel is equal with your rear legs toes. Bend your knees so that your torso is over your lead leg. Keep your elbows in with your hands loose and over your knee.

Now for the shot;
Lower your level
Bring your lead foot foward on it's heel till it would be between your opponent's feet (about a foot/foot and a half)
Rock foward to your toes till your lead leg's knee is on the ground and your rear leg which you have pushed off with is starting to trail behind you.
Step your trailing leg up in front of you, and step with the leg you started leading with and post it in frontof you so that you ave resumed your original stance.

Best way I can describe it off of the top of my head, think double leg takedown.

Here's a guide on the double leg from lockflow

Steps 3-5 are a pretty good example of a shoot. You can practice this on your own by "shooting" across a room. Start at one end of a room. Step forward like in step 3. Leaving your feet where they are, shift your weight forward until your lead knee is on the ground with most of your weight on it, like step 4. Your trailing leg should be straight - that is what is pushing you forward. When you're doing this for real, you should be exploding off that leg, but just do it slow for now. Almost as soon as your leading knee hits the floor, you should bring your trailing leg in and forward, so that it is now your leading leg, and you are kneeling on one knee, as in step 5. You'll probably get mat/rug burn on the top of your feet from dragging your leg forward. You'll get used to it. An important thing to keep in mind is that this leg has a purpose. If you can't get all the way under your opponent like the guy in this example, you can hook that leg around the back of the ankle of your opponent a topple him straight back. Once you've completed that movement, stand up and start over. Your opposite leg should now be leading, and you can try the movement from that side.
