View Full Version : What do you do with your uniform?
Most of the time I try to hang it up. But sometimes I just keep it in my bag.

lets see....
currently my belt and 1 rash guard are in my bag. One gi top and the matching pants are on the floor next to the bag. 2 other pairs of pants are hanging up in my closet with the other gi top and rash guard.
I think that covers just about every choice in the poll, so I just picked other.
Ummm.. after class I generally wash my dogi.
Laundering it comes to mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace

I keep one uniform and gi-less attire w/pads & mouthiece for whatever sparring ready in the gym bag at all times. I only pre-pack clean items, so as I get in from class I place in the laundry room and then pre-pack another set of whatever I wore before. The other "yet to be used" stuff stays on a hanger or in a drawer. Basically, what I'm trying to say is I have entirely too much stuff to be able to rotate through a week's worth of classes. ;) Getting funky is better than being funky, G.
Peace
I sell my used gis on ebay. :D
Ohh! Guess I'll have to go on ebay right away!

Do you sign them too just in case you're rich and famous someday?
Are you implying I'm not already? :D
I usually keep it in my gym bag til I wash it. Also, for those dealing with smelly boxing gloves...I usually spray some microbial febreeze into them and just let it drip out. Jus in case anyone had that problem...

It depends.
If I only teach a class and don't work up a real sweat it goes back in the bag.
If I work up a sweat it gets hung out until the second wear unless it is really sweaty.
For grappling gear, Uwagi or rash guard gets rotated every class. They are never worn twice unless I'm gonna role with one of the guys that can tear me up. Then I like to make them suffer.
Honestly I don't even have a gym bag that I keep clothes in, just other odds and ends. I do all my dressing and stuff at home... generally just gets tossed over a chair in my room.
Heh. At least I'm a typical teen in that sense...
After practice I wash my judogi and stick a clean one in my bag with my obi, shin pads, knee pads, elbow support, shoulder protector, tape (for fingers/toes)......hmmm, maybe martial arts aren't as beneficial to your health as they say!
Richard
Wash it and hang it to dry.
Or, just hang it and spray with a little lysol :D and use it again in a few days.

I have two Gi's, one black and one red. I have them laundered and heavy starch, because of the snapping sound they make when doing kata :)

Toss 'em in the clothes hamper & grab another tshirt & set of pants for the next night.
The silks are dry cleaned & hung.

my gi smells.. and its wrinkled.. the problem is after my work out im so tired and lazy i dont care where it goes.. so it gets crumpled and thrown in the gym bag.. i should just get a bunch of gi's to counter this problem and alternate between smelly gi's

So much for martial arts imparting personal discipline.
After being washed and hung to dry, my gi is folded and tied to fit perfectly into my gym bag. It gets washed after every one to two classes depending on what we do.
Since I usually take a kickboxing class which ends an hour before Aikido, I always shower beforehand so I'm never nasty getting into my gi either.

I checked "other". The worn gi always gets washed, hung out to dry and ironed. I like the feel of fresh clean keikogi. Can't stand "funky" smells, Good thing I have not gone into the grappling arts (yet).
Then I pack a fresh set into my bag, along with lots of extra t-shirts and a pair of jogging pants.
The rest stay in the clothes closet.
Wash it and hang to dry at weekend.
Just hang it, inbetween lessons (dont have time to get it dried between lessons if I wash it).

I'm soaking wet at the end of class, so my dogi goes directly into the washer once I get back home.
My hapkido dobak goes in a backpack along with my mouthpeice and belt. My BJJ gi goes in a gym bag with my rashguard, mouthpeice, belt, and tape.

My judogi keeps shrinking, so half the time I wash it, half the time I just hang and febreeze it.
Seems to be doing okay..

I always have my gi washed, dried, ironed and starched after every workout in it. I have 3 sets in case one or two aren't dry when I have a workout.

Kurt, your gi keeps shrinking? Wash it in cold water and then air dry, do ya? I used to buy a size larger and then shrink to fit, but nowadays I'm liking pre-shrunk more and more. If you have to dry your gi, use low heat and then do not overheat the gi. The dryer is where the shrinking happens (most often). You can also stretch the gi as soon as you pull it out of the washer before you let it drip dry.

Cold water wash and then promptly removed to hang dry on over the treadmill (I thread the sleeves over the bars so that they're wide apart as it dries).
It just seems tighter each time I put the jacket on, but maybe some of it is in my head. The truth is that I should have gotten a size larger and just had somebody hem the pants. I'll know better next time I buy a gi.
Fat kids like me have it rough. :(
Wash it immediately as soon as I get home no matter what ! Yuck!

lol. I have an entire CLOSET filled with TKD doboks and one HKD dobok. I used to wash upwards of 15 doboks per week when all of us were active. It worked out well as my kids and I all wore a size 3. Now I am heavier and they are taller, so we are leaning more into the size 4's. No shortage of doboks here - I wash for TKD once a week and HKD after every use. I should add the HKD dobok is very heavy (like a BJJ jacket) and is a half a load by itself.

I have 2 BJJ uniforms and they are usually soaked after class (sweat, blood, and urine if I'm really scared  ) They go right into the washer as soon as I get home. I just swap between them for each class.
I'm sure your fellow martial artists are glad of that.
I have once clean in my locker and I take the smelly one home to wash.

I never wash mine, that way I win all my matches to forfeit.
Actually I wash it after every two or possibly three classes, but usually its too smelly to go more than two. I carry it home outside of my gymbag so as not to get any of its mankyness on the stuff in my bag and I hang it to dry on the chairs in my kitchen.
i wash my pants and top after every training..no, actually before the training (i start about 1 or 2 hours before I have to leave) untill then they are flying aroung in my room, since I'm too tired when I come home. I've got a biiiiig chair which I bury with clothes....well, my bandages are different, they always stay in my bag...hmm untill, by accident, they find their way to the washing machine (thanks mum!!) they just get forgotten! but they only go around my hands anyway..

I chose other, since I generally do not wear a uniform. I wear yoga pants and a t shirt virtually every day for everything, that works very well for going straight from morning workout, to work, back to the school for kids classes, then to Muay Thai class.
I have karate and judo 'gis in a locker, Hakama and shiromusashi hanging up, Kung Fu uniforms cotton and satin hanging up and miscellaneaous San Da and Muay Thai shorts in lockers or on my bedroom floor. One pair of gloves and handwraps on the floor at the school right now. Others in locker or gym bag. I live right across the street from the school, so I generally don't have anything packed for the journey to class.

What's a uniform? The last time I trained martial arts that needed a real uniform was when I did shotokan karate when I was about 12-14. Nothing since then (JKD, Kali, or even Shaolin) has required a uniform so I normally just wear loose fitting sweats and a tshirt when i train, these get washed along with the rest of my cloths on wednesday :)

I have multiple uniforms, try to switch every day and keep them clean.
The top gets thrown into a bag and the bottoms are washed daily...

I dont put mine in a Gym Bag, I carry it the old school way folded and tied up with my belt, alot of people dont like to do this because they have nothing to put there clothing in and fear theft of there belongings.

I forgot about mine once and left it in my bag for about 3 days after a particularly sweaty training session.
My ******* belt went mouldy  it still stinks.

I just wear it home and go straight to bed. :bandit:
Kidding. Straight into the wash with knee pads, jock, and periodically, the elastic sweat band that goes with my goggles. I use fabric softener with my heavy-weight tops (mainly karate gis) and always shower before class. There is usually a spare gi on the hanger and an extra in my bag, so I'm always ready to go.
All kidding aside, once a few months ago, someone was stinking up the dojo -- either a lack of grooming or a dirty gi. I think Sensei dealt with it because it never happened again.

I take it home and immediately wash it because it is saturated with sweat.
I never wash it - I find it a lot easier to get jogai's on opponent in kumite when I stink!

I wash my uniform and then place it in one of my many clothes draws.
I would like to be able to wash it after each class, but I have only 2 karategis and 4 classes a week. And they are both heavyweight gis, so no chances to have them dry that soon.
I just hang it to dry and the wear it the next day. Then I take the other and wear it 2 days
After about two or three classes, yeah I know disgusting, I wash it. Most of the time it ends up on my top-bunk until I wear it next.
I wash it, line dry, iron, and fold it a certain way Kanazawa does it.

I now have 3 gi's, 1 (lightweight) white for training & practicing..I launder this.
2 (middleweight) 12 oz..we consider 14 oz to be heavyweight in our circle  1 is black and 1 is red, and not to hide the blood....these are for tourney's only, so they get the heavy starch at the dry cleaners...I tend to cheat at events, so the snap of the starched do bok gives me the upper hand  gives the illusion of real power and intensity :bandit: All's fair in love and war....

I think I am up to 7 dogi. A couple are so threadbare that I don't wear them any more, however.
After class (and lifting weights), I am pretty exhausted. My gym bag goes on the floor of my office. Sometime in the next couple of days, I will pull the old uniform out of the gym bag and place it in the laundry room, replacing it with a fresh, clean dogi before I go out the door for class.
I try to wash it or if the class wasn't too dificult (which rarely happens) I will just hang it up. But again, most of the time I wash my dobak after class.

I have enough (too many according to some) Gi's to rotate them periodically, but every 5 classes I need to wash them.

Intersting that some people (and that is assumng they are telling the truth) wear a dirty, crumpled up suit that they haven't bothered laundering since last time they trained. Some people obviously don't take pride in their appearance, or the fact that when they put that uniform on they are representing thier MA and school.
Well, I have 4 or 5 gi's (no longer sure at this point) and my husband has 5 or 6 gi's. Our studio is at home, so after class they get tossed directly into the wash, dried and then hung in their own special wardrobe. (Makes it easier to find them for next class)

My BJJ uniform gets hung up to air out, I have classes mon-thurs and dont have time usually to wash or dry it in time for the next class. I'm looking to get another one, but I don't have the $$$ yet.
Fightshorts get thrown on a chair in my room, rashguard gets thrown in the laundry since I only use it once a week.
At school, I usually only wear gi pants, and I usually mean to wash em, but end up pulling them out of the wash for practice.

I sweat in mine.
sometimes I bleed on it.
sometimes I get someone else to bleed on it.
I like to wear a uniform out.
When its dirty I wash it then hang it over a chair to dry.
I once went swimming in one by accident.
I train 2 to 3 times a week and have 3 gi's so they get washed after each class.
