View Full Version : Glock or Ruger .40cal?

I'm having issues deciding between the Glock 23 and a Ruger (both .40cal). The Ruger is roughly $100 cheaper, but is there a good Pro/Con for either?

Glock, I hate Ruger pistols.
Also, I kind of like the new Springfield XD line. I don't own one but several friends do and they shoot alot like the Glock.
I don't have any data tp support or dispute, but I do not like Ruger semi's. I put them in the same categories as Smith's semis.
I would personaly go with the Glock.
Glock.
Ruger makes a great wheel gun, but dont know their *** from a tea kettle when it comes to making autos.

Sold! Thanks for the input, fella's. I think it'll be a nice compliment to my .357 mag revolver (Taurus Titanium, 2" barrel, 7 rds).

Tony,
You will be happy with your .40 caliber Glock ! It is a great gun.

The mod 23 is probably the best overall model of Glock also. It's big enough for serious use, good size caliber, and it's small enough to conceal easy. That is what I carry on duty and I carried it off duty for many years before I bought my mod 27. Probably half the officers I know that carry Glocks carry the Mod 23.

Let me be the voice of dissent here. Not that I am championing the Ruger; I can't stand their semi-autos. Seriously look into the Springfield XD line. Many of the Glock band wagon folks that I know have gone to these for IDPA competition as well as personal carry.
If I had to make a choice between the Glock and the Ruger, it would be the Glock.
They don't make these night sights for the XD yet, but are worth a look.

Yeah add me in to... I wouldn't use a Ruger auto for much less than an emergency hammer. Mind you... I like Glock about the same, but that's personal bias, not mfg issues with performance problems.
Between the 2... Glock.

I tend to agree with you here.
Im a huge fan of the CZ-75 and its variants, particularly the CZ-75 Compact .40
But that wasnt an option on the list.

Ooohhh.... I dig the CZ variants. I carried an EAA Witness compact 9mm for about 3 years. I sold it to an old roommate. I still kick myself over that sale...
But I'm so satisfied with my P220 I hardly handle anything else. I would like a P228 though. I had a P229 but it didn't feel the same as the 220 in the grip shape. It was a little more round in the back where it sat against my palm.
Oh... a nice 1911 would always be welcomed at any time as well.

Ah...but of course. :)
Glock. Ruger is cheaper for a reason. My brothers look down their noses at me for having a reliable, rugged, and reasonably accurate gun.
But I once cleared a bad jam from the chamber of my .40 with a piece of rebar, reassembled and resumed operations.
My brothers can think what they want. I like Glock.

As much as I hate chain stores as opposed to mom and pop gun shops, check with Academy. Their prices have everyone beat around here.

You americans are mad bastards. carrying glocks or rugers around is dangerous to my health. thankfully most guys in australia who go crazy have rifles, not pistols. And I can see them coming. I don't really know what you guys are talking about but we used to have six shot ruger .357 magnums and now we have glock semi automaticks with fifteen rounds in the magazine. the glock shoots straighter and has more rounds and as an aussie, I am happy with the glock. but then again, most gunfights in these parts involve rifles and pistols are as useless a tits on a bull against a rifle But then I guess I come from a different culture.

Uhhh... yeah...
And do you usually put yourself into a position where someone would want to point at a gun at you? Do you mug often? Burglerize? Rape?
Otherwise its just a chunk of metal (and sometimes plastic) that if you just mind your own business, you never have to worry about.\
I don't really know what you guys are talking about
Thats obvious enough, but you still seem to have an opinion on the matter. wow.

In the future, feel free to lurk for a while, read a thread or two (or at least the one you are getting ready to post on) before you decide to post...
Thanks!
I think baralaba was being sort of complimentary. I have heard this sort of statement from Aussies before when doing 'mad' (crazy) things. Also note that baralaba goes on to discuss his fondness for the high round autoloaders versus the wheel gun and it relative effectiveness so he must sorta like them.
I think this is fair dinkum.
Yours in international understanding,
yeah, I can see how "carrying glocks or rugers around is dangerous to my health. thankfully most guys in australia who go crazy have rifles, not pistols. And I can see them coming." is complementary

thankfully most guys in australia who go crazy have rifles, not pistols. And I can see them coming.
Let's discuss that a little further.
My personal effective range with any of my 1911 model .45 acp's would be around 50 yards.
My personal effective range with any of my unscoped rifles would be about 150 yards.
My personal effective range with any of my scoped rifles would be 300 yards+.
I might be seen coming with my pistols, but I can hide even my fat arse really well if I were intent on doing harm with my rifles.
I thought about making that point Dennis... but I had a feeling that the fear and helplessness of being in the crosshairs of a sniper would go right over his head.
It never ceases to amaze me (though it does show very well how uninformed anti-gunners are) that people will act like a pistol is some horror of horrors and talk about how dangerous they are and how easily they kill.... but it never once occurs to them that the "safe" bolt action rifle is the most deadly object a rifleman can lay hands on.

I agree, Joe. I really hoping that we don't have another anti-gunner in our midst. I was starting to like more of the people around here. :D

Crazy American swines!!!
I just got a call from the dealer that my XD is being transfered to and it should be here tomorrow. Less than two day delivery - awesome!
I noticed that Glock is usually 1 round (capacity) above the competition. Is that by some patented "nobody is capable of equaling" design or do the competitors choose not to match the round capacity for a reason? Insights?
Peace

No idea, Glocks always had a pretty huge capacity... but pistols like the beretta 92 have equal capacity.
It modernises the question, "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire 13 shots or only 12?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a Glock, one of the most highest capacity handguns in the world you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
Hint: Is the slide locked back?

XD .45ACP (http://www.springfield-armory.com/prod-xdpstl-45acp.shtml)
I just purchased the .40, which I really enjoy, and almost sold myself on the .45GAP until I saw this. See, an XD makes you want another and another and another. Talk about your GAS! (Gun Acquisition Syndrome) I can already hear the whinning of my wife when my order comes in -
Now that I've found some accessory sites, I'm getting a little crazy with it. Tricking them out with lights -n- lasers and holster's that are designed for it. Getting a little Hollywood-ish. She's gonna drop bricks if I don't get the Bullpup from the gun show out of my head, too! I found a manufacturer that makes one with a reversible bolt for us lefties.

I love my XD .40 sub compact. It is a great carry weapon for a waist pack or in the waistband.
