Good luck! (I think it's koshi guruma)
Well I passed. Was pretty sure I would.
2 annoyances, they made me stand too far forward on the mat, so my first forward roll had me off the mat, unfortunatly Sensai did'nt see that. Now as this was part of a sequence we were doing it put me out of time which Sensai did notice, and was asked to do them again later, by myself, but I proved myself.
Then I got useless git (when we were doing the throws in pairs) who couldnt throw me very, and ripped my ear and put a cut in me head on his 2nd throw, so that part of the grading was cut short for me.
Rest of the grading went fine, I was rushing things a bit, so not being neat, but I think I only made a few minor mistakes.
At the end we did a V attack, where people take it in turns to attack with punches and bottles and the idea is to deal with them quickly (rather than perfect technique)... basically to see how you work under pressure, this suited me and Sensai commented what I did was good.

Hey nick, as you are now a yellow belt, we could call you a bumble bee :D
Well done! You've taken the first step on a long road, but it's well worth travelling!

120 senior white belts (from around the county)!
20 or so higher belts.
All of us white belts passed, from what I saw, everyone deserved to pass.
Cheers everyone.
Just add that to the yellow belt for Karate and TKD I have !
Congrats, Nick.
As said earlier, I got a green belt in the style you practise when I lived in Bristol years ago. Let me know when they require you to do ukemi (a forward roll) from a table (I think that's blue belt level) and make sure you be careful with that stuff. One of the guys who practised it one week before his exam dislocated his shoulder so he couldn't participate in the grading. That was a real bummer.

That's awsome, but you know what they say, belts are completely useless. Children need them so they can see their progress. But, for us it's useless.
But, good to go anyhow!

Belts are not useless. They keep my denims up when I am walking about.

My school doesn't use colored belts, except white, brown and black for adults. But how can they be considered totally useless?
Only you know how good you are and where you stand in your training. What is wrong with a material thing to prove to you and others that you are improving? Although the belt is not (and should not be) a goal in itself I believe it can motivate a person into doing better.
And again, if the goal of most adults in martial arts is to better themselves in one way or another (and not due to a color of a belt), then why do many stop when they reach black. It is only a belt, and a colored one at that.
Congratulations Nick!

I think belts have a little more use than you give them credit for.
You wouldn't want a guy(adult) who just walked off the street tangling with a guy(adult or even adolescent) who's been taking for years, would you?
Belts are quite useful when you are teaching larger groups, especially if you are a full time teacher. At the start of the training, you can see what level and how many of them are in class today and adjust your lesson to it. E.g. got 6 orange belts, two yellow, 3 green and two blue, four brown belts -> split up the group and differtiate in your teaching. Just as a rough guide.
..and my belt keeps my gi-top tied together so that all those ladies do not swoon when they see my well-formed abdomen ;)

Hell yes! Thats the best combination. Because the veteran can work with the newbie on a one-on-one level and dial things to the right level for the new guy to learn, and all the while, the veteran is getting a more intemate understanding of what he is doing through seeing things from the POV of an instructor.
Now, if the guy who has been training for years and either cant control himself or he has some innate need to hurt someone who has little or no defensive ability..... well, then youve got a problem on your hands, because youve got a person who likes to hurt people, and he knows how.
/thread drift
You need to have goals and motivation in what you are learning, belt system give you something to aim for and improve yourself, if you dont actually test yourself how do you tell if you are improving; there are other ways of testing yourself, belt system is just one example.
Also in a class is useful way to group people of similar skills and abilities. Can be plain dangerous to mix people of abilities, like higher belts there are leg grabs and throws which the lower belts dont even know learn how to fall from, serious injury could happen if you are not prepared... you gotta make sure that the more experienced person can also teach the less experienced person, rather than just practise their techniques.
I do appreciate that belts are not the be all and end all, just like any exam are only a test and no proof how you can apply your skills/knowledge in a real world situation, but merely an indication.
There is also the issue of people who want to be a black belt... dont care about the how good they actually are, just want something that is well a label, status symbol.

Are you saying those higher belts arnt capable of dialing their techniques down to work at the skill level of lower ranked people? Scary.
Most people who train at any place for any length of time will know who they can "go" with and who the cant....
