Hi, ive never practiced judo, but my sifu made us do reports on various martial arts, i thought id show you some of my research, and see if you would help me correct any misinformations. Thanks in advance.

Judo was developed by Jigoro Kano, and began to be popularized as in 1882 as Jujutsu was disappearing. Judo is considered the budo form of Jujutsu, the way rather than the art. Originally Judo was meant to represent physical education and culture. Kano never wished for judo to become a sport, his was based on the principle of the best use of energy (Seiryoku Zenyo) and the princinple of mutual welfare (Jita Kyoei). He cautioned against the misuse of energies, both mental and physical. His judo depended on the correct way and time to yield or resist, a fact overlooked by beginners. Kano studied sumo and jujutsu, his two main styles were Kito Ryu and Tenshinshinyo Ryu. From these styles he built his judo, inluding throwing, grappling, recovery, and atemi(striking). Although Kano eventually toned down the atemi combat aspects, he still had katas designed with self defense in mind. These katas along with shiai(contests) were the key training. With the modern emphasis on sport, many of the defense and internal aspects wer greatly mutated. Kano is also responsible for creating the ranking system used in all modern budo systems ( karate, judo, etc...). However this system is comletely absent from more jutsu related systems.

Judo contributed to burmese bando

In thailand Prince Wibulya Swasdiwonsa Swasdikul became proficcient and taught a form of judo very close to kanos kodokan style. However skill in thailand remains mediocre but very popular.

In indonesia many judo techniques have een incorporated into their style Kuntao.

Please give me any more info you may have.

Thanks.

this was actually a few years ago. every once in a while he runs what he calls "martial arts academics class", and we have to study the various martial arts styles of the world.

btw Donn Dreagers "Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts" is a great source.

I thought that with the opportunity to speak directly with so many experienced judoka, i might be able to get better or more complete info.

It's getting late and I hear my bed calling. Your facts are essentially correct although the "sport" statement will generate "healthy" discussion in some places. Kano's designed his judo to be practiced in three ways, randori, kata and shiai. Shiai is essentially a competition. Kano also died on his way home as Japan's representative to the Olympics. From what I have read, Kano wished judo to be practiced for many reasons and on many levels.

1) A method of physical exercise that is fun

2) Useful for self defense

3) Builds personnel discipline through its study.

In several books written by persons who knew Kano personally, they explain that it was Kano's hope that through the study of judo, the judoka would become a better person. If everyone in Japan studied judo, then Japan would be a better country. At the time of judo's inception, Kano saw a general malaise and lack of character in Japan, his opinion. He hoped to correct this through judo.

Peace

Dennis

Actually Kuntao is not an Indonesian Martial art. The word Kuntao is used by overseas chinese who has lived in Indonesia for many many years , and means KungFu. Yes Kuntao is just another word for chinese KungFu.
And KungFu is a generic term for all chinese martial arts. There are more than 100 style of chinese martial art..

Indonesian Martial art is called Pencak Silat. And just as KungFu , there are more than 100 style of this art.
About Judo techniques have been incorporated into Pencak Silat .... hmmm I am not sure since there are too many style in this art. But I have never seen a style that incorporate Judo techniques.
My friend who learn this art once said, there is a style that looks simmiliar to Judo ,namely Minang art. They use low stance and grappling is a part of their art.

Kuntao is a word from the dialect of Fujian (A southern Chinese province, near Taiwan). Kun means fist, tao literally means head or leading. I think Kuntao in a literal sense means leading fist.

Kun is Kuen in Cantonese dialect; is chuan (as in chuan fa) in the mandarin dialect.

Some historical background:
During the early 19th century, many southern chinese especially from the province of Fujian emigrated to Indonesia to escape poverty back in China. As such they brought with them gung-fu especially the southern style to Indonesia.

I am not sure why they call it Kuntao, to my ears it sound rather coarse. But I suspect that it could be mainly due to the fact that most of the immigrants are from the lower social economic class, and as such they speak a more unrefined form of the language.

IMO, Kuntao is not a new entity, it is just southern style CMA by another name.
