Despite them being in the Shorinji Kempo photo area, they are not of Shorinji Kempo.

Careful, Anders, you don't have your protective Moderator coat of armour over here, David might Getcha!!!
David: Are you going to have those deleted? (now that we've pointed them out to you...)

The pics look like Shotokan Karate to me, from the lapel badges of the participants, and the photo of Funakoshi Sensei on the wall behind them. This implies that they scribbled a note to the effect, "Upload to SK folder" and the rest, as they say, is history.
Oh, and no self-respecting Shorinji Kenshi would misspell "sensei", would they...? ;)

I’ve been on holidays for the last few weeks. I’ve got another week off and then back to work. I’ve been trying to finish rebuilding my old Ducati. It’s been in a state of rebuild since I last fell off it a few months ago. Just a note, mae ukemi works really well when done from a speeding motorcycle.

I've just been hiding from the extreme tedium of my lowly existence by following Colin around the various boards. Every now and then I get to post a really pertinent and valid "Err, what he said!" ;).
I heard you were in London recently, are you any closer to moving away from Japan?

I feel tempted to make comments about the pair in Highland dress (with the diminutive tree in the background), but both of them look like they could (and would) use me like a chamois on a bonnet top. You're looking well Tony, and with that outfit on, I suspect you'd probably already had a dram or two... :).

That's my Dundonian stepfather and me at Hogmanay, just before we really hit the bottle, at a ceadlih. The rising sun pic was taken on the beach in front of my parents' house. I presumably don't need to explain the third pic.

Tony, does this mean that the new Doctor Who programs were broadcast in Japan? And that is one great picture on the beach. Is there any post-op work, or was that bird really there and the starburst a filter on your camera lens?
And how does your stepdad manage to look so authentic, without any orange hair or a can of McEwans in his hand? I'm guessing your outfit is rented, while he just got back from fighting some sassenachs away from the village with a Claymore, some empty whisky bottles and some entrails left over from the Haggis wrapping ceremony... :karate:

I used to really enjoy the old Dr Who shows and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the new series that aired here last year. I loved the idea of a fiendishly disguised alien nemesis that farted a lot.

I have now answered the PM :)
As for Holmes, I'd probably make a very unconvincing Sherlock, as my violin playing is atrocious, I was always useless at Chemistry and my powers of deduction are on a par with Dr Watson (he's just along for the ride and to record the adventures for publication). I've never tried opium (not even the perfume) and I am a no-pipe kind of chap. Mind you, I do like dressing up and could probably fake a few accents, so maybe all is not lost.
Now then, let's go back and see if I can decode Tony's answer...

I thought it was cocaine - a 7% solution?
Tony didn't know you were a big Doctor Who fan - and I thought it was only being broadcast in Canada and the U.K. because the it was jointly funded by the BBC and CBC. Looks it was broadcast in Australia though.
In any case you have to check them out -Ecclestone was the coolest Doc. so far and Tennant looks to be just as good.

DW was also broadcast in Korea, and has just been sold the the US SciFi Channel. Don't ask me on a public forum how come I've seen all the episodes, though... ;)
Of course I'm a big DW fan; I'm a huge nerd, remember... :D
What I really like in the Dalek episode was how they addressed all the criticisms of them . I remember seeing a Jon Pertwee interview and he said you pretty much fixed them by going up a flight of stairs, so they had a nice little scene on that.
I hear Elisabeth Sladen and K9 are back in the new episodes, now if only they could find a way to get Tom Baker in there. My personal request would be Nicola Bryant in the bikini again.
Man, I must be a major geek to know all this.
So which companion was your favourite Tony?

Favourite companions: Nicola Bryant for the hormonal rush, and Jaimie McCrimmon for the sheer fun of the idea of a Highlander in the Tardis.
The episode starring Sladen and K9 also stars Anthony Stewart Head, "Giles" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Did you see the "Christmas Invasion"? They ran teasers for the new season at the end.
Yep, caught the Christmas episode, and read and interview with Stewart Head playing coy when he was asked if he was the new Master. He would be a good choice.

Thank you. The first few were a little dark, but I plead jet lag at the time.
The logo retains the surrounding Japanese shield to represent defence, and the two interlocking circles are an ancient Buddhist symbol to denote duality (yin/yang), or in our case, hard/soft, love/strength, etc.
Any other Kenshi with more to add?

Thank you, Sensei. Reading the English translations, I realised just how much more poetic the original Japanese sounds. I guess there's something to a transaltion that just isn't captured in the original... :D

Thanks Tony, much appreciated. I'll save some copies if you don't mind.
David, the pic with the '80' on the end is Sami Elkhalifa from e-budo. It's me as the attacker in the next few with Stuart Tatlock. Aran Lunzer is the one who was "MC'ing" for the closing ceremony. In those pics Tony Kehoe is the flash of light in the background because of the large mirror in the studio.

I am gradually getting to recognise DD, but the others were all new to me. Could you remind me who Stuart Tatlock is? Is it a name I recognise, or is it just one of those names that seem familiar when you hear it?
I was surprised to see no glimpse of Mizuno Sensei. Was he away? Is Mayfair the only closing ceremony, or is it done elsewhere as well? It was always at Stockwell when I was around (Lansdowne Rd, London Judo Society).
What do you guys think about getting some pictures on this site's photo gallery? Do you think we should put some of those personal pics on, rather than any of the classic publicity shots that Hombu instructors have done over the years. I imagine there might be some implications for copyright by uploading to the site (maybe you waive your rights!). I guess I should check that.... :)
Kimpatsu
01-22-2006, 04:56
I think Stuart tatlock joined after you left, David. That's why I didn't cite his name specifically, nor Arun Lundzer's. I thought you just wouldn't know who these people are.
Shorinji Kempo moved from the LJS at Lansdowne Way in 1987, whilst you were still training; you told me by e-mail once that you remember the move. Anyway, we did hold the closing ceremony there for many years, but attendance at the Brixton Rec fell off so badly (no Gerry Rixen or me to chivvy things along... ;) ), so training there is now held on Saturdays only, as a kind of annex of Danceworks (Mayfair), which is now the flagship branch. Hence its use as the venue for the closing ceremony.
Mizuno Sensei was indeed there; I just didn't snap any pics of him. (I plead jet lag... :p )
I hereby waive any and all copyright on pics in which I feature, so feel free to post them here. I don't know about DD, though; isn't his chracter owned by Marvel Comics...? :D

"Flagship branch"! :D
Yep, I used to cycle to Stockwell from Finchley Road, but I think I got nervous leaving my bike outside at Brixton so I got the tube after the move. Danceworks used to host gradings and I know it from those, but I never went training there for a regular session (perhaps they clashed with Abbey).

I heard that the LJS closed down completely in 2000, and is no more. The new owners (i.e., the people who took over and forced our move in 1987) just got too greedy.
