This is a question that has been bugging me for a while now. Is there anyway to practice Jujutsu without a training partner. Obviously you can practice some ukemi and do visualizations, but what else can you do. I know that the striking styles can practice strikes and kata alone, but Jujutsu kata is all done with 2 people, and i have never really seen any benifit to pantomiming the movements of a throw without a partner. So what do you all do? Is training just limited to the mat and when you got a buddy around who doesn't mind taking falls, or is there more that i can do on my own?

Solo uchikomi is often used in judo. It is helpful but if you do not have a partner to practice with, and an instructor to correct form, you can form bad habits (technique) real quick.

No worries about the instructor or partners, We have class 2-3 times a week, i was just looking for some stuff i could do to practice on my own between classes.

Could you explain solo uchikomi a bit. My understanding is that uchikomi is practicing enterances (and sometimes loads) without completing the throw. Is this correct? If so how does one practice that solo?

When I used to train in aikido, I trained on my own quite a bit.

I worked up to 500 sword cuts a day, and 100 back breakfalls. The style of aikido I trained in had a very well defined set of basic movements, so I practiced those everyday. I'd also walk through all my testing techniques. Finally, I made it a habit to watch a video of the testing techniques I was responsible to know.

It works best for throws. Wrap a belt or rubber tube around a post/tree/pillar that is not going to move, then practice your pull and entry for you favorite throw. Concentrate on technique first, reps second, speed of entry third. For foot sweeps you can do them without the belt and do them stationary and moving. You can do forward entries and reverse entries. Throws like seoi-nage and harai-goshi are ones I do a lot. You can do a throw like Uchi-Mata with a belt concentrating on the pull and without, concentrating on lifting the leg high and dipping the head low. Do both sides. High rep uchikomi is also a great aerobic workout.
