There are a number of ways to spell ju-jutsu. Phonetically it is close to juu-jutsu, or jiu jitsu, or ju jistsu, or jujutsu.. or ....or ....
All the same beast.

I know what jui jitsu is but i dont know what ju jutsu is unless its just the same thing and im being mistaken.
jiujitsu and jujutsu are just anglicized versions of the japanese word. since the japanese dont use roman symbols, however they spell the word has nothing to do with how we spell it. we just tried to spell it according to our alphabet system (graphophonemics), therefore jujutsu and jiujitsu are just different spellings of the same word, like blue (in the U.S.)and bleu (in the U.K.).
As for the definition of the art, its supposed to translate as 'the gentle art'. How gentle, I'm not sure, but it incorporates a lot of locks, holds, and grappling. I'm absolutely sure you can do a search either on this site or on google that can give you tons of info on the art

OOOO I thought jujutsu was some kind of sword art and juijitsu was like BJJ. Thanks doug!
Although any of the above mentioned spellings are acceptable as a general rule these days people tend to use the Jiu Jitsu spelling when refering to BJJ and either JuJutsu or JuJitsu when refering to Japanese Jujutsu. This isn't a hard and fast rule, just what i have observed.
As to what it is Jujutsu is most often translated as the gentle art, but could be translated as the yielding art, refering to the principle of never directly meeting your opponent force on force (when he pushes, you pull etc) Generally Jujutsu incorporates a lot of throw, Joint locks, Chokes, and depending on the system may focus quite a bit on groundwork.

Got it thanks charlie.
I think the "gentle" part means that you have a little more control than if you were striking where there's a split second impact that causes less controlable injury.
Also a choke is far more gentle and controllable than a sword cut.

Uhhhh,
I think he missed my point. Thanks to the rest of you for being clear. It seems the idea of a phonetic was maybe what confused him. Oh wait just noticed, sorry it is the grammar king from another thread, that answers it all.
4reel! ;)

柔術 is the proper way to write it, while じゅじゅつ is the proper pronunciation. ;)
