View Full Version : The Unofficial Newbie Thread

I'm far from Moderator material and I've only been on this board for roughly a year, but the following are some of the "look 'n learn" things that Newbies should know that aren't included in the rules:

The Mods are people, and have their own humanly opinions, AND are often on the same page with each other on many topics. Don't take their mutual disagreement with your opinion as "ganging up".
Don't try to be the revolutionary in your first post. If you've got a brand new path to enlightenment, why not use the search feature and dig a little bit to see one of two things: A. if this new path or something REMARKABLY similar has already been discovered and discussed, even in some obscure, out-of-date thread (possibly for a reason) B. To see the response to similar proclamations and see how the bulk of the members respond to this sort of revolutionary thinking. Not much has not been done in technique or principal in the same or similar way already in the millenia that the martial arts have evolved through. On a related note, if it's been threaded before, don't thread it again. Again, search it and make sure that you're not just starting up a discussion that was buried 2 years before you graced the welcome page. Usually one or two words out of your potential thread's title or keywords from the subject will point you right in the face of your thread's twin brother or clear you to post. If it's the former case, rack up all the info from the related thread and if there is still a question unanswered, start a new thread with the wording to match that specific question or possibly consult with one of the contributors to the older thread via PM.
Consider how you present your statements, in both your wording and grammatical correctness. Rule #10 states, "Posts should be typed in clear and concise language, with the aim of using correct spelling and punctuation in order to best facilitate communication with your fellow members." Why not try to use a comma every once in a while to signify breaks or pauses? You're not being asked learn to route out every misused semicolon, but when you're dealing with a statement such as "i can do a jumping roundkick one time i was feeding my dog when..." it would be a blessing to everyone if some proper punctuation was ATTEMPTED. Don't be put off if, in the middle of a post, someone goes totally off topic to ask you if your mind can fathom the concept of the Shift key. You're breaking the rules and, just as you would be stopped in the middle of discussion to be told of your violation of the "Real Name" rule, you shouldn't be surprised to be reprimanded for your horrible and/or careless spelling and punctuation. Just take another look next time. You're trying to convey a message to your peers, and ease of understanding to all as well as the reflection upon yourself should be good enough reason to clean up your run-ons and fragments.

Those are just some major points that a lot of newbie's have taken issue with lately. If anyone disagrees or wants to add, especially mods, please use this thread to put the word out. Again, I'm very much a newbie myself and I'm definitely not trying to be self-righteous (I tried to be a revolutionary in one of my firsts). :D

Damn kid.
You sure you're not 30 hiding in a 15 year old body?

I have never been able to type or get my thoughts as concise and articulate as you just did at 15.

Good job Jared.

Seriously, everything everyone said is true, Jared.
