View Full Version : Royce Gracie vs. Matt Hughes(UFC 59)
I will definetly order this one! As for the fight, I think Matt Hughes will probably get a decision over Royce. Hughes better try to knock him out, because if he doesnt, he'll be in Royce's guard, which is not a smart idea on Matt's part. I hope Hughes starts to GnP and gets armbarred. That would be sick!!! :t2:

Preliminary poll is a tight one...
Royce Gracie will win 47
Matt Hughes will win 46
Should be a fantastic match...and I am at odds as to who to pull for. (I voted for Gracie though)
My money is on Hughes...to lose. I am going with Royce on this one.

Gracie. Hughes is going to be a little too cocky on this one, and Royce is gonna get him.

That's kinda the way I see it. Hughes is a bit on the arrogant side, and Royce is a seasoned, mature, and excellent fighter with great stamina...
Definately a must see.
Though Royce has a dominant ground game, he'll only get to use it in his guard, and Royce's stand up game is "WEAK", or so people think, maybe he's been training alot of standup. On the other hand, Hughes' stand up isnt his strongest point either, its his grappling and GnP from top while in a guard. But Matt's stradegy to the fight is to keep Royce standing so he can out strike him. But if Royce's striking is decent, he'll be able to clinch, and from there, the fight will go to the ground. Royce will use a tight, high guard and immediatly get a front headlock. From there, he'll be offensive with submission attempts will Hughes will have to be very weary of Royce's movements. But i still cant see Royce catching Hughes in a submission for some reason, but its still possible with that scenario. However, if Hughes is on bottom, in guard, Royce might pass his guard and Hughes still wont be able to catch a submission from in guard. If Royce is a superior grappler to Hughes, then he has a very good chance of winning, even by decision. But the only way i see hughes winning is by TKO, or by decision from his takedowns, GnP, and overall effort. And we all know what happens with a striker vs. grappler fight, and thats almost what its going to be, so i'd have to go with Gracie on this one.
Besides, who do you think is training harder for this fight???

My money's on Royce, but that may be a nostalgic he's-a-legend kind of bias.

That's the key...Royce has much to prove, and I can almost guarantee that he is training for the fight of his life...
And to Hughes, its just another opponent, another fight.

I wouldn't say that. This is a big fight that has got a lot of people (even BudoSeekers :) ) talking.
how come i have a red dot when everyone else has a green? and how to I change my "Junior Member" thing?

Junior Member is the User Group for members who have 100 posts or less. It has nothing to do with age, rank, experience, etc. Though it can reflect attitude or stupidity in the case of a banning cutting one's posting days. :D
I believe the red dot is for those members under the "Invisible" option. You can go to User CP and Options to change it.

Hughes will win. He is an unconventional fighter. He won't be taken down by Royce, he is better from the clinch, and most importantly he doesn't just sit in someone's guard which is what Royce is used to. He will lift them up and throw them them, if he wants to even fool around in that area. We have seen him do it before against BJJ fighters and he can do it again.
He could easily when this fight by standing, or he could easily win this fight by just muscling Royce on the ground. I honestly think that the odds of Royce winning are slim to none. This fight is just going to make Hughes look good, and Royce look bad.

As long as Hughes sticks to his stated game plan of staying on his feet the fight is his. There's no way that Royce can take him down, and there's no way that Royce will beat him in striking.
However if Hughes gives in to his wrestler's instincts and takes Royce down, then there's a chance of Royce sneaking in a submission. Hughes has lost by submission before, and he's come awfully close in a couple of matches that he ended up winning. I still think that the odds are on Hughes even if it goes to the ground, but it will be a lot more even if that happens.

Agreed. A Royce win requires two things: Matt doing something really dumb and Royce being really lucky. If both of these things don't happen at the same time I can't see Hughes losing.

Pat Miletich had this to say about Matt:
Let’s first get back to Royce — Matt’s mad. Matt’s offended that Royce is even getting in the ring with him and thinking he’s gonna win. First of all, Matt thinks that way for everybody, it doesn’t matter who you are. The fact that you get in the ring with him, he’s offended that you have the balls to climb in the ring with him and think you’re going to win. That’s just his mentality.
That sort of attitude makes me really hope that Royce surprises everybody and submits that sucker. Nothing annoys me like ego.

I don't know Tony. Matt has ioncredible ground and pound skills from the guard, which I would guess is where Royce will instinctively try to hold him in times of trouble. Matt gives up his back to Royce, like he did to Trigg and GSP, then I believe he may be going nighty-night.
Royce may be old, but I think he has toughness still...and he may take a battering in the proccess, but I really think he is just as capable of pulling off an incredible upset, especially with a mistake from an overconfident Matt Hughes. He's due for a good stroke of luck too. ;)

Well, for some, they try to get all PO'ed or psyched out some way. For Matt, I guess that is just him and what he does.....and obviously it has brought him great success.

I don't think there's any way Royce can win this fight. The only way I could see it is from a submission on his back, and I just don't think that's going to happen. There's no way he can take Hughes down, so the fight's going to remain standing as long as Matt wants it there. Once on the ground, Matt is stronger and has great wrestling. He's submitted about half of his opponents, so he's familliar enough to defend subs. And, he's fought TOP fighters every fight for the last two years and dominated. Simply put, he's very strong, very well-rounded, and at the peak of his game. Royce has never really evolved and his on his decline. Sure, it's a fight. Anything could happen and Royce pulling off an upset is the stuff of legends. But, if I were a bettin' man, I'd say Hughes by TKO or decision.
Whatever...
