I was looking at the weapons section of a MA supplies website and they had a weapon on the Chinese MA weapons section called the meteor hammer. I'm not that familiar with CMA weapons and was wondering if someone could explain the weapon to me. Thanks.

It is a length of chain with a wieght on each end. Not sure on the exact lengths or weight of the ends, it is swung around the body and through the air. It is similar to rope darts in function except that you can not catch a rope dart. Many kung fu movies feature similar weapons, like Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon.

Meteor Hammers are also very dangerous, miss one of those catches and you could end up with a fractured skull or worse.

Great, they're more dangerous than nunchaku. That rules them out. I beat myself up enough with nunchaku, and that's with good instructors. I don't know of a good CMA instructor in this area.
Are they aimed primarily at the head or are they effective when used against the body and limbs?

Think about a deep sea fishing weight (I suppose there's no deap see fishing in Arkansas) connected to a rope smashing into you, I don't think it matters where it hits, its going to hurt.

Altho head is probably the most deadly attacking area, broken ribs don't feel too hot either.

Meteor hammer, known as flying hammer, is one of the soft weapons. Long ago, when hunting, man used vine rope to tie stone balls and throw them so as to bind the legs of wild animals. There are two kinds of meteor hammer-single ones and double ones. The rope for the single hammer is about five meters long with one end tied to a hand and another to a duck-egg bronze hammer, shaped like a melon. The rope for the twin weights is about 1.7 meters in length and there is a small bronze hammer on each end. When in action, the hammer in the front hand is used for attack and the other for protection.

In practice, you may put the rope around your neck, >ack, shoulder, elbow, wrist, thigh, shank, foot or waist. Vfter the hammer is released, it moves as fast as a neteor. The routines include a loafer kicking a ball and i fairy maiden spinning. If you change the hammer to i dart, it is a rope-dart. The playing tricks include winding, throwing, and swinging .

I have been deep sea fishing off the coast of Florida. I remember the weights. Yea, I think it would hurt to get smack with one.

There is a school that teaches seven star praying mantis here in Hot Springs, but I have no idea if the instructor is any good or not. I know the area the school in Little Rock is at. But it's about an hour and half away, sometimes less if traffic's not too bad. On a good day, hour and ten.

I looked at authentic Kung Fu's ( http://www.authentickungfu.com/seven_star/mantis_links.html ) directory of 7* Mantis schools, and there is none in AR as far as a I could find, but perhaps you could find his name at the mantis cave lineage charts and get info there.( http://www.geocities.com/mantiscave/frame.htm )

I had his name from an article the local newspaper did on his school. But I threw it away about a month ago. I've stopped by his school once during the day. He doesn't advertise at all. His sign is very modest. About the same size as the screen on my computer monitor. The building is far enough from the street I had to pull into the parking lot, get out of my truck and walk over to the building to make sure I had the right place. It's on a very busy street here in town. I'd say the "main" street on the west side of town. There is a huge amount of traffic on it every day. I have no idea how many times I've driven past it and never knew it was there until I happened to see the article in the paper.

Now a TKD school about a mile away from his, built a large building with very large sign the says "KARATE USA" in red, white, and blue. But on inspection, they are TKD. And they are right next to the road, so you can't miss them.

Just the fact that the Seven star school keeps such a low profile makes me very curious. No phone number or class schedule on the door or sign. Just a small sign that tells the school name. Which I can't remember either. :D

I know a few schools like that as well, hidden so no one would even know they were there, but incredible martial arts within, it might be worth a try, if you can get the teachers name, please let me know.
