It's actually pretty bad - his wife is trekking in Tasmania and hasn't been in contact. I really hope she doesn't hear second hand.

I read that in the article. I wish they had not released the information until they had contacted her.

I really liked Mr. Irwin. I was really upset with the local NBC broadcast of the death when all they seemed to want to talk about was when he fed a croc with his baby in his arms back in 2004. Yeah, he shouldn't have done that, but this was not the time to bring that up.

Mr. Irwin definately had a brilliant understanding of animal kung fu. He knew how to maneuver around the dangerous animals he worked with. He just made some sort of mistake with this stingray.

This is a big time sad day for me. I really liked the guy and what he represented.:(

I read that they didn't release his identity to the media until his family had been notified.

Yep, he died doing exactly what he would want to be doing.
My luck it'll be some freak office chair accident.

What a shame. Man did a lot of good. :(

He was the only guy that could say "Crikey" and not look like a tool, one of the Aussie bouncers in Glasgow that I worked with knew him before he got well known and says he was a very gennuine guy who regularily put himself on the line to protect animals and people. It's a sad loss.

I can hardly belive it, he was a real embassador for conservation, a great guy. I guess he died doing something he loved...and I'm sure he'd say...it wasn't the ray's fault, I'm in his environment.

What a crappy weekend.

It's sad his children will grow up without their father. But with all the video footage of him over the years, and the conservation work he's done I'm sure they'll understand the man their father was.

While I wasn't a big fan of the show, (I do not like snakes) I do have great respect for what he has done to popularize nature and it's creatures.
My prayers goes out to the family.

I really enjoyed his show.

CRIKEY!

Damn shame the odds caught up to him. At least he died living his life.

Or as another great man put it better...

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those timid spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -- Theodore Roosevelt

Haven't we all done stupid and foolish things for no better reason than to give our life meaning, excitement or to impress a girl?

Hell I was about 28 before I discovered I was actually mortal and not bulletprooof.

I understand your point, but Steve lived his life.

Yes, I have - doing some of the same things he did. And yes, he sure did lead a full life. Not full enough for his kids, unfortunately.

I rarely give a rat's patoot about the life or death of any celebrity, but this one definitely strikes a sombre note.

RIP, Crocodile Hunter...

It's sad that he had to go so soon. At least he left a worthy legacy to the world. May Mr. Irwin Rest In Peace.

Definitely a sad day. Such a freak accident that ended in the death of someone who contributed a lot to education and conservation. I guess if you play with fire you will eventually get burned. He will be surely missed, not just by his family, but by his fans.

There's a great article in the Times about him and how his view of the animal kingdom was almost like that of a child. It drew a certain innocence out of those who watched him, too. The crocodile or snake or whatever wasn't evil or scary, but something to be awed and respected.

Too bad about his death. It's pretty wild when someone dies of a freak accident that's a fluke in a field ripe with freak accidents. From what I heard about his death, the giant sting ray doesn't attack people all that often and when it does, it usually isn't fatal. Just bad luck that it got him right through the heart.

Stingrays don't "attack" people; they don't swim up to you and impale you with their spine. They thrash to get away from people who are stepping on them or purposely messing with them. That thrashing causes one to be stuck.

He was much appreciated for what he did for the animal kingdom and conservation in general.

I've spent some time land surveying in Florida swamps, I can tell you he was truly a brave man.

I'll miss him and feel for his family. See you on the other side Steve!

I was surprised at the size of the "Bull" or Smooth Stingrays up there. up to 3m in length.

I've snorkelled at the same spot - very sobering.

I guess it gives new meaning to the phrase, "Mess with the bull, you get the horn."

I've never been around those, but we have Atlantic stingrays everywhere down here. They are very docile unless caught or if you screw with them.

I'll miss him. He brought about a lot of joy.

I always wondered when his famous words "don't do this at home, it's very, very dangerous" would catch up with him.

Sad that they actually did.
