View Full Version : Balance training
I am 200 lbs and study judo. I'm having balance issues (as in easy ippon in less than 30 seconds) and I want to change that. Along with tons of squats, are there any exercises that can make a difference? There's an upcoming class tournament, and I dont want to blow it because I cant keep my balance.

Patrick, I'm about 260 lbs. To keep your balance you need to stay in shizenhontai (normal posture). I tell my students keep your head over your hips. It takes lots of practice and you will get thrown, BUT, if you keep at it your judo will be awesome.

Some thoughts.
Keep your knees bent
Don't lean forward(keep the middle of your chest overtop of your abdomen when ever possible) -same thing Dennis said
Fight off the grip of anyone who tries to grab behind your neck
Don't rock back on your heels if stepping back
Try some sacrfice techniques if you know any.
Practice, practice, practice - Like Cliff siad.
keep you knees bent
Bent knees mean mobilty. A locked knee is an invitation to get tossed.
Judo is about maintianing your posture while causing your opponent to lose his.

"...I tell my students keep your head over your hips..."
LOL - funny. I tell mine to keep their 'nose above their toes' which is similar but a little different I guess...
And I think someone already mentioned it but - keep your knees bent :D
thanks for the suggestions. I'll do my best to apply them in sparing.
