My son broke his collarbone in two places last night due to receiving a high impact throw. I thought this type of throw is illegal in middle school? What is the rule in your area?

Also, there was no medical support staff on hand at the match. As far as I could tell, he received no medical evaluation by anyone. I am just thankful that I was at the match to attend to his needs & take him to the doctor's office immediately. What kind of medically trained staff are available at your middle schools during wrestling matches?

Am I just overreacting?:hot:

There is no UIL sanctioned wrestling in my area. I wish there were, I would have done that in addition to playing football, or possibly instead of.

I cannot answer your questions, but I would think that there should have been some sort of trained medical staff at the event. Even a school's sports trainer would have sufficient medical knowledge to recognize a possible injury such as that. I do not think you are over reacting.

First off, you have every right as a parent to be concerned for your child's well being. Were I a parent and my child were to be injured in a sporting event where there was no on site medical staff I too would be upset.

Second off, in middle and high school school wrestling, slams are illegal. Performing a slam typically results in point deductions or DQ depending on the severity of the slam. This is not an area rule, it is universal.

As far as the medical staff question goes it varies greatly between areas. When I was wrestling my junior year and almost broke my neck they gave me a bag of ice and sat me off to the side. My coach would have taken me to the hospital but my dad was there to do it. There was no medical staff on site and I was only briefly inspected by their athletic trainer. (This was at Oscar Smith High School Chesapeake VA)

At most schools there will be at least one EMT on site, and when there wasn't I have seen a wrestler immobilized while an ambulance came to the scene. At larger tournaments there is almost always an EMT team on sight with the ambulance in the parking lot.

I am sorry to hear that you son was hurt, there are things that you can do though. Write or call the school athletic association or school board, just calmly and rationally tell them your story and ask them what can be done to ensure that this situation is not repeated. I hope that you son makes a fast and full recovery.

Yeesh, nobody had better tell me that Judo is too dangerous to be a High School sport from now on.

I hope your son recovers soon, Dana. I definitely think you're within your rights to bring forth a grievance.

Here the rules are the same for middle schools as they are for high school. There is no ambulance waiting outside like in football because usually an injury that serious is rare to occur. A broken arm would be most common. Freestyle techniques and tosses are generally frowned upon because it is not a freestyle match (for school related purposes).
