Hi all. I wonder if anyone could point me to some good books/video (or even websites) on the techniques of the manriki-kusari. Apart from the book 'Spike and Chain' I can't find much.

Thank you in advance for any info you can offer.

I have a great tape from Japan (BAB) on the kusari fundo (chain). Good coverage of basics and various applications with it from Kiraku ryu bujutsu. Have anything to trade?

Another budo ryuha which uses the weapon is Masaki ryu Manrikikusari.

I am not trying to be a wize ass :) but kusari (chain) is not spelled with a k when it stuck with another word like manriki so the right way to spell it is Manriki-gusari. When words that start with a k like kama, kusari and keri have a word that is stuck in front of it like the k changes into g like mae-geri and Kusari-gama.

Hiya Gunny,

If you're interested, I have an old book by Motokatsu Inoue - there is a section on the surujin.

Drop me a line at the usual place if you're interested in getting a copy of it.

Scott

btw, 'kusari/gusari' whatever, but 'wize-ass' doesn't look right either!

You're quite right. Dunno why I typed it like that.

Erin, don't have anything to trade, although I may be interested in buying a copy if it's compatible with my VCR...

I'll drop you a line Scott :)

For the record: Perhaps the first book on the subject written in English was "Spike and Chain" or "Ninja Weapons: Chain and Shuriken" (both the same book with different titles) by Charles Gruzanski.

You can still pick these books up at Amazon.com.

Always,

If you want to be a wizeass spell kamae right ;)

Someother common ones are h -> b/p, k -> g, t -> d

Only applies to japanese though ;)

Careful Leon, the guy from Iceland was talking about a Kama with a chain (http://tkdtutor.com/15Weapons/Offensive/KusariGama.htm) (not a kamae).

Yup,

David is correct, Leon, it's Kusarigama (Sickle and weighted chain). Nothing to do with kamae mate. :)

Hey Gunny, "That is unless the Corps has promoted you since we last conversed. :wink2: "

Look up anything by Yumio Nawa in your next search.

He is or was the comandant of Masaki Ryu technology.

Unfortunately Gruzansky is no longer with us.

He was Kyokushinkai as well as a Nawa student.

His son has a website, that I have saved in my favorites. however, I am on the job at this time, and do not have access to my favorites.

You can find the site by doing a search on e-budo I beleive.

Anyway, Semper Fi, OooRahh, and all that good stuff.

He's retired now and passes on the Masaki Ryu via a Shihan system.
