View Full Version : Workout Log.
Anyone maintain a workout log? How is it broken down? Do you use a notebook or do you have a spreadsheet?
I recently instituted a strength/conditioning workout to supplement my MA training and found it is easier for me to maintain my workout by keeping track of it.
Although work got in the way this past week it still helped keeping track of what I did not do and what I need to do to get back into a routine. Also by writing everything down is also motivates me to keep going.
I document not only the different exercises and reps I'm doing but the specific conditioning exercise like shin conditioning to make sure I don't overdo it and to maintain a consistency.
I use the MS works calander to note the general type of work-outs for each day. Weight lifting by body parts, running, bag work, ma class, other sport specific work-outs like Bas' routines etc.... That way I can see what I need at a glance. Then I use a program like Word to record the daily details.

I plan in advance and record every bit of my workout. I leave nothing to chance and am always tinkering with it to some extent. Probably, this surprises absolutely no one on this board.:D

No, not at all. I was actually thinking of you as I typed the initial post. :)

I never have kept a log. I start out with it, but after about three days I tend to quit using it.
I log my gym visits in my palm pilot.
I have a workout planned and marked down every day - 6x gym, 1x pool.
A good week is one where I have not erased many of them. I usually average 4 gym visits per week (before going to work) and a mile in the pool every second week.
Still, that's barely 5 hours of working out, usually less, and I'm not getting any track time in. Sheesh....
You're doing a heck of alot better than most are Erik. Don't kick yourself...
Jason
I keep an Excel sheet of my private lessons and a one or two line blurb describing what I did that day, for future quick reference. In my wirebound, physical journals I write prolifically.
I have done it in the past, I logged what lifts I did, the weight and reps plus any stretching or cardio. I also logged how I felt before the workout and afterwards. It worked really good for me.
So why don't I do it anymore DUHH!
Peace
Dennis
I have a calandar where I write down what/if I exercised that day. That's about it...

sets/reps. excersices. time of rest. intesity level 1-10. time of cardio. total time of workout. how i felt. any supplementation. this should be standard in all your lgos. you can buy them premaide and durable against wear and tear from almost any second hand sports store or flex magazine. cost 14$ better than a regular notebook.
A notebook I already had is cheaper than going out and buying one. Plus I can set it up any way I want with specifics exercises I choose.
Tony, you might like to print up a template you made in Excel, then punch holes, and use that in your notebook. Just an idea.
You can control the size of the page to print under "view", also, so don't worry if it's too big.
I'll be glad to help you tweak it if you aren't too familiar with Excel.

For Jason's class I keep a lifting log.
Weight, reps, sets, rest time, etc.

Thanks Erik. That's a good idea. When the time comes (when I get a good routine going) I'll try that. Right now money is tight. I can't go spending money.
Only cost is:
- printing one copy of your sheet (one copy per type, so maybe one for karate, another for track, another for swimming, or all in one, depending on how you organize it)
- your $2.00 3-ring binder (preferably small enough to be easy to carry)
- photocopies
When the time comes, I'll be glad to show you a few ideas. I've been doing this since high school (though certainly NOT consistently... )
I use a little bitty notebook that fits in my shorts pocket. I have to use it. Otherwise I will forget to do part of my workout. I did that once. I thought I was done, but I know about how long my routine should take. I look at the clock and think dang that was quick. I forgot the bent over rows. By then I had already finshised with the isolation arm work and could not effective do my rows. Getting old is rough.
I learned today that the log can be a great motivator, especially when yesterday's entry reads; Lazy.

My log is spreadsheet-esque. If I'm working consistantly, I *always* keep a workout/meal/supp journal.
It's the diet log that's really tough to keep...:anger:

That's the easy one for me.
Fitday.com is good for tracking your diet and you can use it for your workouts.

Are you bulking? I hope you are not cutting.

I'm going to start logging my workouts more accurately. I've done it on and off for diet, and I've decided to make that a regular thing as well. I'm looking for a good system to get started, as well as trying to work out a good general training program. I've decided it's well past time I get these things down more consistantly.
