ok well i had been doing research on my family history yamada , but sadly i have come to a end ,because we have no records and my last connection to the past is all the way in japan my great granpa hes around 80 some so i cant ask him any thing because im stuck here , but he has a katana from maybe from 1500-1600,but not sure a real date, but his family past down (blade is rusted) and his father had a tatto and in japan in those day tattos were not common.
well heres my question is there any place i could find more info on my family genealogy a web site or a place any thing would help.but dont it make you wonder?
thx in advance

I don't understand why you can't ask your grandfather and/or go with a relative to Japan and just look up the family Koseki and go from there.

He has no phone? I find that a bit hard to believe. And he is Japanese but you have no other family that can interpret for you? This is all sounding a bit odd....

What about a letter? Certainly there has to be someone at a local college that would help you formulate a letter to your grand father. Give it a try.

i never thought about that i willl give it a try.
Send him a letter, ask him to plot out a family tree as best he can.
Don't worry if it all comes back in Japanese. You can learn to read/write a bit and look up these names. It's better if they are spellt in Japanese so you will be less likely to loose accuracy in translation. Besides, it can be very, very fun to learn the language and go back in your antecedent culture. It can remain very interesting for your whole lifetime.
Good luck. This could be a fun adventure.
