View Full Version : wushu staff form
Ok, in my school we do some wushu stuff my sifu learns from a past Chinese champ (from my understanding) who has a school close by. So I have learned form called 32 staff. I have to admit I was skeptical at first, but it is pretty cool to do. So my question is, what do people think of wushu in general? Any value or just a mock art.
I understand that wushu is a performance/spectator sport, but it has helped me in my other studies. So, any value or not....

It is fun to learn weapons, and the staff can be cool to use. The wushu method is made up of various skills taken from traditional styles - the problem (in my opinion) is that the forms tend to ignore most basic strikes/movements and practice mostly the flashy ones (spin around the head, figure eights, jumps, etc.) - so when you try and spar with it you may find yourself in a conundrum (or just out of breath :) ).
If your instructor also teaches a more basic set, it may help out.

I dont mean to sound sarcastic but you dont know what your saying.
Traditional is Wushu, modern is Wushu, Tai Chi is Wushu, American boxing is Wushu, Muay Thai is Wushu, ALL martial arts are Wushu.
Wushu = War Art (Wu / War + Shu / Art ) not modern sporty stuff.
Kung Fu is a slang term for the skill required from effort over time. You can have Kung Fu in anything....cooking, painting, carpentry....
Flashy moves are not there just to please the crowd. They are there to demonstrate and build strength, fleixibility, speed, agility, explosiveness...
I find it funny that people complain about flashy moves and low stances in the their forms and then go train in Yoga and add plometrics to their training.
BTW I did Wah Lum under Chan Poi here in Boston waaaaay back in the day.
