Someone posted a video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=SMR1bGAGJT0) sparring match between the two. I need to see it a couple of times before I can comment.

Where was the Shorinji Kempo?

I never saw any application of Shorinji Kempo hokei in this clip. They could have been doing any martial art. What is the point of all the time spent on practicing basic hokei waza such as uchi uke zuki, etc. if you aren't going to even attempt to apply it in randori?

Perhaps it is the format. With both sides free to attack, neither seems willing to completely commit to the attack. Without committed attacks it is very hard to apply good defense and counter-attack.

At least they are having fun.

I would have to agree with Gary on this. I didn't really see any kempo in that vid as well as the total lack of commitment to any of the strikes. But a few other things kind of "urked" me with this video. 1.) They seem to consistantly drop their guard whenever they kick. That typically would get you clocked in the head in just about any school I've been to. 2.) Bouncing. One thing that I was consistantly told in my upbringing in TKD was not to bounce. I've had my legs swept out a few times because me "bouncing"
i don't really think i need to go on about the telegraphing.
well, that's my review. But I guess most of that would be rendered moot if they were just goofing off.

thats my 2 cents

You can just make out the black logo on the top of the dogi - I think thats where the SK is...

Bouncing can be useful - its a good way of masking movement, especially something like sashikomi-mawashi-geri

I know nothing about TKD but every time I see a competition I rarely see them keep their hands up, even at Olympic level.

As far as the rest of the video is concern, I had to admit that I too did not see much Shorinji Kempo. In fact I was wondering if the Kenshi was playing too much his oppent's game rather than his own.

... and both participants were Kenshi, so neither of them were being "pure" to their chosen art.

Fun. Not a classic. Hardly worth watching. It would have to be a rainy day with nothing on TV before I consider watching it again. It just made me yearn for something better.

Well, saying "at the Olympic level" is kind of a misnomer. The way Olympic TKD is scored, it's kind of pointless to have your hands up. Traditional TKD, on the other hand, isn't that much different from Karate besides some differences in some of the stances and technique.
