On occasion one come across an article that makes you think or say; "That's right, damnit!"
or "That's exactly how I feel!" or just plain "Bravo".
The following article is just that for me. Although my life has led me to train and fall in love with a TMA, I always tried to train and think outside the box. Sometimes successfully more often not.

Please excuse me as the article just came out in one the police periodicals I get so I have to type it. Some of you may be familiar with article and the author.

By Ralph Mroz
Take a look at the above photograph. It's the back of an instructor at a cutting edge course which trains participants on the realities of extreme close quarter gunfights - in this case, rolling around on the ground with a gun in play. After all, too often, that is reality! Note that the instructor himself was down in the dirt demonstrating the techniques - and making them work.
Sometimes, I'm asked how a prospective student can recognize a street realistic, martial arts/defensive tactics or firearms programs, I tell them to look on the wall for FIST suits. if there aren't any, then tactics isn't practiced at full power and therefore, the instructor has no confidence in them; likewise for firearm programs. I tell people to make sure the program includes force on force training with Airsoft or Simunitions replica firearms. If this isn't done, then the tactics are being validated and, further, you are getting no real training for a fight.
Likewise, make sure the instructor is down on the ground, rolling in the dirt, and taking the Simunition or Airsoft hits with you. That way, you know that he knows his stuff and you know that the tactics he's teaching can work. There's nothing wrong with some students being more skilled than the instructor - it happens - but the tactics have to be verified by actually doing them under realistic conditions.
We are - or should be- way past the day when some out of shape drill instructor wanna-be teaches you to hit the empty air or striking bags, or teaches you how to put little hoes in paper. All that is a necessary beginning, of course, but if you are paid to intervene - as we all are - you need to know how to actually fight. And, there isn't any way to do that except to uses the most realistic training technology we have (FIST suits and Simunitions or Airsoft guns) in true full-speed full force scenarios.
Demand it and accept no substitutes!
Note: The instructor in the picture above is "Southnarc," a police officer who has developed the most advanced extreme lose quarter shooting technique out there. His DVD's can be ordered at www.shivworks.com
So Mr. Mroz, Bravo!
So excuse me while I go dust off our FIST suit

It's great to see Southnarc getting the recognition he deserves. Thanks for posting this, Tony.

A very good article thanks for sharing. I got the point even without the picture.
