How many of you practice/train with weapons, be it in class and/or alone? If so, how frequently?

Out of 6,5 h per week of organised keiko we dedicate 3h for aiki-ken/aiki-jo.

Members are also expected to do suburi and solo-kata on their own time so that the classes can focus on corrections and stuff you canīt do on your own.

The school (Roswell Budokan) has several class a week with weapons.
I come from an FMA background, so I play daily.

I am kind of the new kid on the block so I tend to respond to everything right now, that being said... we typically train with our weapons at least once per week. Sensei used to set aside one day for weapons until she noticed that too amny students were "comming only for weapons" or not comming because it was weapons day. Now she never tell us what day it will be, si you have to show up ready for anything. Personally I like it.

Mr. Dewey, are you training with Mr. Lowery and the other Koryu folks there in St. Louis?

At this point in my training, of which I am a relative beginner, I train with bokken and tanto. I'd say that approximately a quarter to a third of each class, which I attend three days a week, is dedicated to ken and/or tanto kata.

When I have time on my off nights from budo training, I try to practice suburi, ken roppo, and tanto happo after I return from weight and cardio workout at the gym. On average I'd say that I manage to squeeze this in about two days a week. Though it does vary week to week depending on my home oriented responsibilities.

Part of almost every class will have some buki waza. It may be solo kata or paired kata, or simply stances. Tanto, Jo and Bokken are used. They appear on probably 7kyu tests out of 9. We start at 9th kyu.

Best,
Ron

We train weapons once a week on a regular basis. It helps with many aspects of our training including timing, strength, maai and focus to name a few.
