My friend has come back to maryland and he have been gone for 3 years. He had been training in a style called bando. I did a search on wiki and I found it to be interesting. It is a martial arts style from burma and it incorporates 9 animal systems: including bull, boar, cobra, viper, python, panther, tiger, scorpion and eagle. I would like to know if there is anyone here on the fourms who also train in bando? Please share with me about your training methods.

Back when I lived in Baltimore (23 years ago), there were at least a couple of active Bando training groups. They were non-commerical clubs, training out of community centers and basements. You might want to look around and see if there is some instruction available in your own area.
I've only seen the kickboxing aspect of bando, myself. I know they have the 9 animal systems, but I'm not clear on how those relate to the kickboxing techniques.

Same here Tony. When I was going to my former dojo, which has MT, they used to compete every year in Columbus at a Bando event over the Veterans Day weekend. Last Bando event I saw was 11 Nov 2006. From what I saw, Bando rules are pretty much like American kickboxing rule set, but only allows leg kicks above the kness and only to the outside of the leg....no inner thigh kicks. No knees or elbows allowed in bouts either.
The fighters did go full bore though...saw good fighting action. I can't speak to any weapons training, but understand that Bando does incorporate it into their system. Overall, it looks liek an interestin style, but there is some controversy surrounding Dr. Maung Gyi, the Bando Federation founder. Apparently he's falsified his militart service...http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies/phonies1012.htm.....scroll down toward the bottom.
I haven't really seen anything bashing Bando itself per see, just on Gyi himself. Apparently the Dog Brothers train under Gyi.
Javon, you might still want to check out a few classes and make your own decision though.

Mike, I competed in that Columbus tournament a couple of times - won once, lost once. (The second time was actually a combined Bando/Muay Thai competition with knees allowed.) I believe the Bando folks do train with knees and elbows, but since the tournament is an amateur competition they normally leave those out for safety's sake. Either way, they've got some tough fighters.

I posted a new thread in the general martial arts section on Burmese Martial Arts. The school (www.thiang.net) is close by my house and I am going to stop by and observe a class. Has anyone ever trained in this?
Thanks,
