Wonder if i should find a new trainer. He had a professional career and won a regional golden gloves twice, but his record was only like 8 and 16.

His professional record has nothing to do with how good a trainer he is. If he is someone who can TEACH you to fight, that's more important. Some prominent trainers have been ex-fighters, but only a rare one has been a top notch contender (George Benton, Jack Blackburn), much less a champion (Buddy McGirt is a good modern exception). Some have never fought at all, even as amateurs (Angelo Dundee). My personal opinion is that the best teachers are former fighters of modest talent and/or accomplishment. This person is more likely to have the patience to teach someone how to rock a jab, block a left hook and properly slip punches. Take a few lessons and if you're learning something and you're comfortable with the trainer, go for it.
