It's not too bad. I do think the author leaves out a great amount of pride and hubris that went with the jobs the bushi held and how this influenced a false notion of shame; but it's well written, nicely researched and insightful.

Haven't seen it. How well does it match up with the teachings of the Hagakure? Does the author address the differences of roles between times of war and times of peace?

Well....it's a lot less vague than Hagakure. There is a little of the different roles each period would have, but from what I take it is mostly during times of peace (Edo).
