View Full Version : Fusen Ryu on Youtube
I just loaded some video from a Fusen Ryu group.
You can see it HERE (http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=VmVQDWwieQQ)
It was taken at an embu in Sekigahara, Gifu (next door to Aichi...about and hour and a half away from me).
One of the demonstrators has a cast on his left foot...so don't expect jumping around. It does slow down the kata a bit, so it is easy to see what they are doing. More power to him!
link didn't work,couldn't find it.
Thanks Russ!
Several of those moves were similar to what is shown in judo katas (Kime-No-Kata and GoshinJutsu-No-Kata). Of course I think Kano borrowed from Fusen Ryu so that is not unexpected.
Peace
Dennis
Really nice. I liked that it had to done a little slower as I was able to really see and appreciate the techniques.
Thanks for posting, Russ.
Thank you for posting that, Russ. I like seeing a good jujitsu demonstration.

To be honest, I am not sure how much Dr. Kano borrowed as he receive input on when he formed the Judo Kata Seitei Iin. That's something that I would like to know and have been meaning to look into, but I'm usually too busy. I've heard that the kata looks similar to this or that, many times over the years. Each point of view coming from different sources and maybe they are all true. Like everyone I have seen a lot of things that look like the Judo kata; Yet I find it hard to believe that the Judo Kata resemble so much, such a great expanse of work, contained in so little.
Maybe what people see are "universal" principles which were attached to the kata, those that were agreed upon at the time by the various representatives, in the form of a "Seitei". Does that make sense? But then again, I don't have much experience with the formal Judo kata outside of the Nage and Katame, so I am out of my league here.
I wish I were a fly on the wall at the Butokukai in 1906, because so little is really known about what they actually did (or that I can find and verify- other than meeting notes on the speakers and times) on that historic day in 1906.

Hey Russ...
Honestly...I agree, most things can be connected to what we have...Kinda makes it hard to watch Judo, Jiu Jitsu, any other Koryu going without thinking "Hey..That's taken from ......no waza!"....Good point..
Although if the connection isn't direct it does tend to have a different feel to it...The Takeuchi Ryu connection is rather easy to see, and is clear in the video here, thus my comment..
And as for "lineage wars"..LOL..I was reading the shite over on bullshido...Jeezus...Those guys are kinda driven ain't they?Shame that they decided to just put it all out there for all to see...Some people have no class..
Regards..

Takeuchi ryu has to be the most respected, replicated and influential martial art in Japan bar-none. Something that old, with that many roots is bound to have sprouts all over the garden. Totally awesome stuff....and seriously, it must make looking at other ryu interesting....but also mundane. Only if more people knew more about the Kenjutsu and Iai....the world would come screeching to a halt.....:)

I can imagine people proping up stools along the wall and peeking through the musha......seriously, I think a lot of that went on.
