It has been confirmed that Nishiyama Sensei passed away last Friday. There are no funeral arrangement announced as of yet. Will you you guys posted as it comes.

I've been away from karate for quite a few years now, but I didn't even know he was still alive. How old was he (link doesn't work)?

Just heard that news elsewhere this morning.


For those of you who have not already heard, one of the most important Shotokan instructors of all time (and until now the most senior alive) has passed away. Among other things, Nishiyama Sensei helped form the JKA Instructors' Program curriculum in the 1950's, was one of the instructors of the historic Strategic Air Command group in the 1950's. He was a major driving force in spreading Karate outside of Japan. He died in Los Angeles where he relocated to many years ago to spread the art in that country. He leaves many deshi and instructors to continue his teachings. Condolences to his family. A great loss.
