Hey guys. I was just wondering if there are any avid .22 LR shooters here at Budoseek? I have put my plans for a .308 on hold and am thinking about buying a Savage Mark II BV bolt action .22 instead. I would have the same fun, without A LOT of the cost.
So....what .22s are you guys shooting and do you have any advice on guns, optics, or ammo for this fun caliber?

Ruger 10/22 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_10/22). I have it scoped out as well, although, I haven't shot it in years.
I've been shooting my '03 and my 30-30 more than the .22.

I've got a 10/22. Like it a lot but the trigger is something else. I've been thinking about putting a Volquartsen trigger in it but don't know if I want to spend that kind of money.
Winchester Model 74, made in 1939. I bought it for abou $120. Looks like it's selling for around $400 now. Not that I want to sell it - it is a highly accurate, very reliable rifle, as long as you are cycling the correct ammo through it.

I've just got a Marlin model 60 circa 1986..still accurate and reliable as all getout too even after many thousands of rounds put through it. We've also got a tiny Jennings single-shot rifle I used to teach the kids when they were little, the extractor is a POS.
On the rare occasion I mount a scope it's just a little Tasco. Not big on mounting it because it will have to come back off come hunting season, as most shots are taken on a moving target and trying to acquire them in time results in an empty game bag. The .22 LR is such an inherently accurate cartridge I really don't need it for the distances I'm working with anyway. Ammo - whatever I pick up at Wal-Mart, though my favorite were Remington Yellow Jackets (truncated HP). Do they make these any more?
To me, a .22 is a fun piece to just grab and go plinking or 'Step 1' to making a nice squirrel stew. I've never really considered fancy optics, a new trigger or anything. Straight out of the box it was capable of far more accuracy than I am, so I reckon any deficiencies in performance are mine, not the rifle's.

Ruger 10/22.
I have had it for years. It shoots great and on the cheap.
Anschutz 1416 (http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/index.php5?produktID=185&menu=106&sprache=1&produktShow=detail) - I added a Williams peep site that pops on and off pretty easy. Accurate, high quality and a nice trigger. It's what my son learned on also.
I don't know what current prices are, but it was around $350 when I bought it.
I usually shoot Federal target ammo through it.

I ordered the Savage Mark-II BV this morning at Dick's Sporting Goods. I'm going to put a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x38 shotgun scope on it with Leupold rings. I decided on the shotgun scope because of the 75 yard parallax setting. This should allow me to shoot at 100 yards all the way down to squirrel range. I may even put a bipod on it but I haven't decided yet. Definitely looking forward to getting it.
