I've just started my training in the Filipino whips. Pretty cool so far. I have a nice latigo I got from Raffy Pambuan, but looking for a good snakewhip and bullwhip.
We did a little work on that a while back with Guru Chad Dulin and I know the Sayoc's do a fair amount of whip as well. It was fun but (in my opinion) not the most practical thing in the world...

I would have agreed until I started digging more into the roots of Filipino whip. Turns out a lot of Americans are using the wrong whip (big surprise ). They like these 6-8' bull whips, which are definitely impractical. Anthony DeLonghis did a demo at the Cold Steel gathering that changed a lot of minds on that score. His whips are about 4' and work close as well as long distance. He even had a BJJ guy try to close him and grapple and used the whip close to tie up the opponent and the shot-loaded handle to cave the guy's skull (figuratively).
We did use the shorter whip, and I can see where you are coming from I guess. I suppose I just have my hands full trying to learn stick, knife, and empty hand aspects of FMA along with the JKD and grappling. Not to mention, I have been trying to work on my pistol and other shooting skills with regularity.
Only so much time in a given week to work on that sort of thing.

This is one of the guys who supplied whips for the Indiana Jones movies, and for lots of other Hollywood projects. Nice family run business.
I love FMA whip training! Sure, there are other weapons that I would use first, but its a lot of fun. It still is a very formidable weapon!
Train long enough and you could call yourself a "whip master"... LOL

Those are some top dollar items. I bought mine from Peter Jack (www.thewhipman.co.nz/Y-Daga.html) in New Zealand. Peter has a whip specifically designed for latigo y daga. I also have a couple nylon whips on order from Ron Allen that he is custom making to my specs. All three of my whips cost less than one of Morgan's.
