View Full Version : Sayoc Kali Seminar with Tuhon Kier
I'm going to a Sayoc seminar with Tuhon Tom Kier today here in Manassas. I'm looking forward to seeing some more depth in the Sayoc system as I think we are supposed to be getting into their "phase 2" techniques. Most of our training group has been working on the phase one stuff for sometime now and has a basic understanding of their first few templates (3 of 9 right/left/both, tapping, true left template, left defeats right, kerambit, tomahawk, etc.). I know that there is much more out there but to date, I haven't seen it. One of things I really hope to see is how they translate the templates into a "live" situation and work in the tapping when faced with the possibility of getting hit with the other arm, kicked, etc. In addition, I will be curious to find out a bit of what their empty hand work looks as well as their espada y daga. Though, to be fair, I am most interested in their single blade work as that is what they are known for.
Should be an interesting seminar. I'll post comments later on tonight or tomorrow when I get a chance...

Have fun!
Just got back. Great seminar. Tom Kier was a very good guy and somewhat different than you might expect if you have seen videos of the Sayoc material online.
We started off the morning with stick grappling working from various tie-ups both standing and on the ground. We broke for lunch and then came back and did gun disarms, group tactics, and then worked a new blade template for a while.
Good seminar, very informative, and a fun training environment.
In addition, our school was accepted as a Sayoc training center directly under Tuhon Kier which is pretty cool. Typically, schools do not fall directly under the Tuhon's but under the senior associate or full instructor in the area. Guro Baile, my instructor, has a really good relationship with Tuhon Kier from the various LEO instruction they have done together. Probably a good thing for us and should equal out to some very good training.
Sounds like it was a great time. Ive been wanting to train under Tuhon Kier for a while.

I'm jealous. First Tom Kier and soon Dan Inosanto. You really have landed in a great area for FMA.

And here I am being jealous of you for getting to train with Guro Ray and Prof. Dan... LOL

Except Ray is never in town and I have to fly Dan clear across the country to train!
I hear you Barry. I would assume you train under one of Ray's senior students most of the time then? I would love to get a look at the FCS stuff up close some time... I am really intrigued by what Guru Ray did with that system given his background...
Finally got some of our pictures back from the seminar. In both you can see me getting ready to cheerfully accept some pain courtesy of Tuhon Kier... :D One of my fellow students along with myself had the dubious honor of playing "meat puppet" for the day. Luckily, my stint was the shorter of the two...

Sorry, somehow I overlooked this post. On a regular basis I trained with Mike Jennings and Donovan McNeely. Either Ray or Rico Cortes would come up a couple times a year and there are the biannual Family Gatherings in Tampa. Mike has recently moved to Colorado and Donovan is much less active due to personal issues. Video helps me keep up to speed on the techniques but I do need someone to "touch hands" with.
