I just got back from a belt grading in my Modern Arnis class. Two and a half hours of banging followed up by three rounds of live stick sparring.
I felt very good about my performance overall but especially my sparring performance. I worked quite a few thrusts, pulled one legit disarm, and got a ton of head shots in. I probably have more bruises though my sparring partner certainly has his share. However, I know for a fact that there were several times that I took a shot to the arm while I was getting in a solid shot to the head. I thought I broke his clavicle on one shot from an overhead (#10 strike) that missed the head but came down right next to it with quite a bit of force. I learned a good deal from sparring when I was that tired and my back was killing me from already going for two and a half hours. I learned that I have fast backhands, that I leave myself open for a thrust when I crash in, and that my upper body is faster than my lower body when it comes to checking and avoiding shots.
The whole thing was actually kind of funny. We agree prior to each round on how hard we are going to go (e.g. 50%. 75%, etc.) but as soon as one of us gets popped with a good shot, all of our gentlemanly agreements go right out the window and we just start banging for all that we are worth. Luckily we are good friends and we view sparring as our lab to the lecture that is our normal training schedule.
Overall, fun day, hard work, and I just opened a beer that is tasting pretty damn good. Now, for some college football. Geaux Tigers!
Pictures of bruises to follow!
Cheers.
