Just for clarification, only the spear work here is Owari Kan-ryu. The kenjutsu is Yagyu Shinkage-ryu. The 8th soke of Owari Kan-ryu, Kanbe Kinshichi, was a long time student of Yagyu Toshichika, 19th soke of YSR. Kanbe received the highest license in YSR, and taught it at his dojo, the Shunpukan, alongside Owari Kan-ryu, as one of OKR's teachings is that one must know both spear and sword to be any good at either. Russ's excellent video collection here is of the Shunpukan demonstrating their two main arts (as well as O-dachi work from a line of Hikita Kage-ryu), rather than one spear-oriented sogo-bujutsu that includes kenjutsu.

Hey Josh! Nit-picking again? :) Still in Nagoya?
You're right though....the Shunpukan/Owari kan ryu is multi-faceted and totally awesome. There are loads of Fuzoku ryuha in the school...the Jizai ken, Naginata...and a few more that are a load of fun.
I agree with you, however when trying to put something out there as a moniker that is readily understood by all-and-sundry (not even then sometimes) the easiest route is the best. If people want to look it up, they can. This is especially true since there are many groups teaching Shinkage ryu and there is the Yagyu Kai down here....your group. Bigger mistakes can be made then, it's best to just call it by the header-name they request to be put in the Shinkokai Flyers and be done with it. I ran into that exact same problem recently... let me explain:
I have listed some of the assimilated schools of Shinto Muso ryu by their names. It's a ryu I study, so I put in the details. Alas, perfect to a T...yet I receive more questions like "I thought this was Shinto Muso ryu...." and the like. To be honest, getting too detailed over stuff like this just confuses people, ya know? I'm certainly not going to write a scholarly article for each video...so...I stopped doing that.
There you have it! It makes life much easier, otherwise I end up having to explain something people are not usually ready to understand or interested in understanding, so it goes in "one eye and out the other" so to speak.
It's the same reason the Bugeiryuha Daijiten puts the things they do at the beginning of an entry's text.
Kudos!

Hey Josh! Nit-picking again? :) Still in Nagoya? No and yes! To be clear, my post wasn't meant as a correction for you personally, but just to add more context to the videos. I meant to put something to that effect in my post, but I think I got distracted by something else and just hit "Submit Reply".
Bigger mistakes can be made then, it's best to just call it by the header-name they request to be put in the Shinkokai Flyers and be done with it.Actually (and I suppose this is nitpicking), in the fliers and programs I've seen, the Shunpukan has always been careful to list Yagyu Shinkage-ryu and Owari Kan-ryu separately, and listing both side-by-side on the stage card (scroll).

Entirely understandable, but I personally think there's far too much dodgy information out there already, and in as much as we put information out there, it helps to be as precise as possible. Too much detail may confuse people, but then so will not being detailed enough. If they're going to be confused anyway, I'd rather err on the side of precision.
Well, like I said, I understand your position, and don't blame you for it. But I had the time and inclination to add some context, and I thought this was the ideal forum for it. Isn't it?

Yeah of course...I just needed to explain myself. I know you're right on that for sure. :)
Yeah they do flip the card on the stage....if they have it...but the flyer just lists their name- under that what they are doing. Stuff like that. I figured that was good enough and I am just that lazy to let it go- I have a shot of the stage card usually and a lot of the times they speak over the embu explaining what it is too, but then again not everyone speaks limited, pre-school Japanese like me. I agree with you...but I counter with my incredible laziness....and love of beer that keeps me from sanding the warp. ;)
