Question for all our Military Experts. My son Josh, age 18, is seriously considering joining the forces. He feels called to do it. We've been talking and I told him I will support whatever decision he makes 100% (and be scared out of my mind if he goes).

Anyway, he is interested in medic training. He eventually would like to be a flight nurse in civilian life and would like to start his training in the service. Any info to give him is very gratefully accepted.

Thank You!

Dennis

First I would recommend him to get his nursing degree first then go in as an O. In the AF aero medical is a great career field. Although AF and Navy seem to be in the process of downsizing so the wait is considerably long at this point.

I was a combat medic for 2 years active duty. US Army, enlisted. I'd recommend that rout to anyone. A good buddy of mine, who is also a medic just got accepted into flight medic school. To be a medic, after 9 weeks of basic training, he'll go to Fort Sam Houston for 16 weeks of Combat Medic School, or as we affectionately refer to it as, Whiskey Land. The MOS 68W is your baseline medic. To become a flight medic you need to have the MOS Identifier F6, or 68WF6, because he'd me a medic, who flies. To get F6 your son will probably have to complete his first 3-4 year enlistment then re-enlist for the flight medic school. I believe it's only 3 weeks at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.

Honestly, the best source out there on 68W, aside from myself and fellow medics is probably the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/68W

Hope that was useful and concise.

If he's tough then I'd suggest looking at AF Pararescue. I lived with a few of these creatures during college and grad school and they're incredible.

It's a special forces program, though, with a very high dropout rate and your boy will have to become an exceptional athlete, including swimming.
