To those who might be interested,

On Saturday, August 7th, 2010, from 9am until 4pm, the Denbukan Dojo in Indianapolis, Indiana, will be hosting Rodney Uhler Sensei and Mitsuko Hashimoto-Uhler Sensei for a one day workshop on Ono-ha Itto Ryu Sokaku-den.

Ono-ha Itto Ryu is recognized as the oldest of many Kenjutsu schools that developed from the original teachings of Ito Ittosai Kagehisa. The Ono-ha branch was founded by Ono Jiroemon Tadaaki (1565–1628), the immediate successor to Ittosai and a renowned swordsman who went on to become an instructor to both the second and third Tokugawa shoguns.

Itto Ryu was one of the styles of swordsmanship practiced within the Aizu clan since the founding of the clan in the mid-17th century. The famous Takeda Sokaku Sensei of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu mastered the art at the Yokikan dojo of Shibuya Toma in Aizu Bange-cho during the late Edo-period. Takeda Tokimune Sensei, the son of Takeda Sokaku, formalized the swordsmanship passed on to him by his father as Ono-ha Itto Ryu Sokaku-den, and awarded instructor licenses to just a few persons, including Okabayashi Shogen in 1985.

This one day workshop will be taught by Rodney Uhler Sensei and Mitsuko Hashimoto-Uhler Sensei, both senior students (Shihan) of Okabayashi Sensei. Rodney Uhler Sensei received an Ono-ha Itto Ryu license (menkyo) from Okabayshi Sensei in 2009, prior to moving back to the United States after having lived there for almost 16 years.

The focus of our workshop will be the long sword portion of the Gogyo no Kata, a rare set of five forms that were created by Takano Sasaburo of the Nakanishi-ha Itto Ryu (a branch of Ono-ha) around 1904. These kata are derived from the Itto Ryu and actually pre-date the Kendo Kata. These forms are very rare, even in Japan.

The cost of the workshop will be $80.00.
