View Full Version : Robert Bussey
A friend of mine reccomendeed a book by Robert Bussey. I read the thing (it was OK) and couldn't find a single martial art listed specifically, that he has trained in. What I mean is that in several cases, he makes references to having trained extensively in martial arts, but he doesn't list a single style.
Does anyone know anything about this person?
Just Curious....

Bussey does have some training in martial arts, but mostly in marketing. He crawled out from under his rock originally in the '80s when the "ninja boom" hit and we had thought he finally went away :) but he has apparently decided he can make more money and so is now back :(
He received his rank in ninjutsu due to a cross of things, mainly to get rid of him (since that was all he wanted), a joke and a bet. This is coming from the person who was involved in the joke/bet (Charles Daniel). As far as his knowledge of real martial arts and combat (called himself the king of combat) he is pathetic! I have personally talked to both Charles and one of Bussey's former senior students about this and they agree, he is an egocentric money maker.

Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion.
Personally, I think Mr. Bussey is a great guy and very talented at what he does. After all, there is nothing wrong with making a living... ;)

Robert Bussey has an extensive amount of training in a number of styles, but at this point and for a long time has not 'marketed' those styles because it's not quite relevant to what he's doing now, nor to what he's been doing for years.
I met Robert Bussey near Los Angeles in 1993 and began training with him. I left California to study engineering on the east coast, and again became involved in his new work in 2002. He is the farthest thing from a money-grabbing marketer I know.
RBWI, which was Robert Bussey's martial arts organization, make a significant contribution to many people's lives, and to their work and martial arts training as well. Here's a bit of history, an article reprinted with permission:

Jason,
It's tough to get a hold of any copies of his old articles. In the late 80's Robert was a very active writer. Here is an article archived on Black Belt magazine's website. Remember, it's 1987 here, and Robert Bussey has moved away from Ninjutsu. But I think it will help to answer your questions.

When I first got involved in tae kwon do as a youngster, it was enough for me. It was all new, and it was everything that I could handle at that time. But as I grew toward black belt, I felt limited in what I could do as a martial artist. I liked to punch the back area, sweep, and pull hair-all of which I was not allowed to do. By the time I reached my third-degree black belt, I was also teaching hapkido and mookido. The advantage, from my standpoint, was that I could do weapons, joint locks, throws and sweeps. But I still felt very limited. I needed a system that allowed everything. After dabbling in a variety of arts besides the ones I was certified in, I got involved with ninjutsu in Japan under Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi. At last I thought I had found the ultimate martial art. They seemed to do almost everything. But even the ultimate martial art is only as good as the people who practice it.
Best wishes,

Here's a sample of articles. Most are from the RBWI (Robert Bussey Warrior International) days. There are many more from his Ninja days, prior to RBWI.
You can find a few articles on Black Belt Magazine's own website archive.
