I have Norton internet security 2010 and Spy Sweeper whatever is most current.
Norton has a free upgrade to its 2011 version but says SS is not compatable and I must uninstall it.

I don't really mind doing that as SS is a resource hog and seems redundant with all the features and functions of Norton.

but....

is it ok to have only 1 security thingy? I do have windows firewall and let windows (Vista) do its auto-update thing all the time.

can/should I remove SS and reinstall it when norton's upgrade is complete? I swear I think SS makes the machine slow all by itself.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!

i think one securty thing is enough. You can try using avast (google it). They even have a free version. When I was using windows this is what i used and never had any issues.

If you really want to be safe, switch to linux.

I use Avast, but if I were you I'd do the Norton upgrade (since you already have it), dump SS and just get the free version of Malwarebytes anti-malware if it's compatible with Vista.

If you think it slows the computer try SpywareBlaster (freeware) this gives a real-time protection. Or go for Norton antivirus with antispyware. The only advantage of having a spy sweeper is that it can detect rootkit spyware but I think Norton also has that feature. And one more thing, use a more secure browser like Opera if you haven't already.
