This is typical behavior in Japan- it solidifies the seniority system and it assures that older members can defeat the younger, stronger ones. They break down newcomers physically while the seniors rest and gather strength in numbers, then beat the snot out of them (although they are being gentle in this video, many times in Sumo they do go overboard and they have killed people).
