View Full Version : New Moderator shock horror !
Hi,
Our illustrious host has kindly allowed me to contribute a little to Budoseek by moderating a forum.
And this, as they say is it.
A little background on me, I'm a Shodan in Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu, and art I've been training in for a bout 9 years. Prior to that I spent 3 years studying Wado Ryu Karate.
I'm particularly pleased to be moderating the Budo and Martial Arts Philosophy as for me it is the impact that our practice has on the rest of our life that raises, or should raise, the martial arts above the level of sport or hobby.
Anyhoo just wanted to say hi, I'll be starting some new topics soon and look forward to hearing from you all.
Hwyl
Rob
p.s. As it's one of the things I'm sometimes asked, Hwyl (pronounced to rhyme with oil !) is a Welsh word meaning bye.
Good luck Rob!
From a fellow mod :p

"indigenous celtic martial arts and their philosophy"... would that have anything to do with painting yourself blue, screaming at the top of your lungs and trying to attack fortified positions with pointed sticks? :D
Robert C, Ah, so you DO know us then!
Bring on the sasanach's :D
Hey Grendle, didn't realise you were from our neck 'o the woods, sorry :)
Indigenous celtic martial arts?
Don't people realise that we came up with "drunken" boxing before those damn Shaolin monks even thought of it!!! :p

Hi guys...lets not forget the most devastating art of all...the Glasgow Kiss, commonly known as sticking the heid in!!!
Me thinks our benevolent dictator has been watching Braveheart....the best comedy in many years....historically accurate? Who cares....Mel Gibsons accent? Where the hell did that one come from.....Frrrrrreedom, I havnae heard such r's rolling since the usual rubbish on the TV at hogmanay....all that rolling in the gloaming stuff...ha ha :D
Don't people realise that we came up with "drunken" boxing before those damn Shaolin monks even thought of it!!! and I though I was the only one that realised this......

Hey Grendle:
Actually I have never seen Braveheart. I take it from your remarks that it sucked? That is fine by me. I like Mel, but I think most garbage out of Hollywood is just that... GARBAGE! Actually, when I watch TV, I tend to watch The History Channel.
The Celtic Warrior of old certainly had a fierce reputation and I don't think it was from too many pints! :) I just don't think the numerous invaders in your history had any idea that they were going to face an opponent that would throw abandon to the wind and do whatever it took to win. After all, that is what war is all about... winning. They undoubtedly thought they were going to find a bunch of savages that could easily be defeated. Surprise!!

Greetings and grovels Sir
you really must see the film, if only for the accent. Get this, in Stirling, there is a monument to William Wallace and at the foot of it is a naff sandstone statue of Mel Gibson (in a vandal proof cadge) with Freedom ensrcibed on the bottom...of the statue, not Mel's bottom. I like the guy too, especially in the Lethal Weapons movies. Incidentely inside the Wallace monument is a fearsome collection of weapons, inluduing small sharpened hook that were used to cut the girths and tendons from horses as they jumped over the top of you! Anyway not much has changed we still have the same reputation, but we are at heart a friendly bunch, play hard, fight hard and drink hard ;)

Oh man, Braveheart is a great movie! The historical accuracy may not be spot on, but just as a movie, it rocks!
Lots of action, a good story. Great battle scenes. Man vs. Man, Man vs. Himself.
Watch it on video! It's worth four bucks.
If you want to read some good stuff about those murderous Scots, check out a book called "The Steel Bonnets".
Here's the blurb from the publisher...
"From the late 13th century to the middle of the 16th, war and peace were not very different for the people of the borderlands between England and Scotland, where feud and terror, raid and reprisal, blackmail and blood oaths were the everyday stuff of life.
Wielding the narrative genius of a great storyteller, Fraser chronicles Border history, vividly depicting the "guerrilla" lives and strenuous times of the merciless "Reivers" who made lawlessness the "custom of the country." This fascinating work of history is irresistibly compelling-- and thrilling too."

That's a pretty good dePICTion, Robert.
Mandeigh, my kids hate it when I talk about historical inaccuracies in movies like Braveheart, especially since it was otherwise a very enjoyable movie. But in this case, I take strong exception with them.
Our distant ancestor, Lord Napier (from the Celtic nae-peer, without equal), second of his line after the King split us off from Clan Lennox, fought at the battle of Stirling Bridge and many others -- sometimes with Wallace, sometimes not. We lived to fight the evil Brits long after Wallace took the final test of courage -- and eventually, became the evil Brits. Oh, well!
Maybe it's time I went to Edinburgh to find out about my family heritage for myself. I hear August is the best time to go ....

That sounds interesting!

That's the most wit I've seen in a long time. :)
Doesn't anyone else find it strange that the celts in Scotland are known as Picts and the celts in Ireland are known as Scotti.
