I have been looking all over Austin for a Muay Thai school, but there is not one specifically for it. Anyone who teaches Muay Thai just teaches it along with another martial art.

I was recommended to a really good school here that teaches Gracie Jui-Jitsu as well as Muay Thai. I guess that would be a more well-rounded way of doing it. There is also a school that does Jeet Kun Do + Thai boxing. Which one would be better to go to? Honestly, all I really want to do is Muay Thai, but if I have to take it along with something, I'm not sure which one would be more interesting. Gracie Jui-Jitsu is very effective... but it looks kinda boring to me.

Anyway, here are the schools:

Gracie Jui-Jitsu: http://www.austinjj.com/index2.html

Jeet Kun Do: http://hometown.aol.com/rrparra/

This is all I've narrowed it down to so far. There are a LOT of Martial Arts schools in this city, though, so there may be some I haven't found yet.

I mainly want to get into Muay Thai for the conditioning, because I think it's a fascinating art form, and I would love to get into M/T competitions one day.

I think you will find that you can probably join the club & just do the Muay Thai classes. Some clubs offer different levels of cost for doing one or all arts & then some don't.

My advice, go to the clubs, watch a class or two maybe even join in for a "freebie" if they offer that and then talk joining & bucks and make your decision then.

The Gracie club looked the best to me but then I do enjoy a good "roll on the mat" as well as stand up.

Cheers & good luck in your search.

Sean:)

jread, please don't forget to put your real, full name in all your posts as per the forum rules.

I've heard good things about Ray Parra from my cop friends. I think he's a JKD derivative, but solid. I think he teaches DPS troopers or something like that.

I've never met Frank Benn, but I've corresponded with him via email and read a lot of his writings. He invited me to train free at his school several years ago, but I never made it over there.

Here's the info I have for him.

Integrated Fighting Arts Academy

He's written a ton of interesting stuff over the years on the rec.martial-arts newsgroup...

He's pretty irreverant and outspoken! I'd like to meet him in person someday.

John... thanks again for your help! I really liked reading Frank Benn's stuff!

I'm confused about the "full-name" thing. I did put my full name in my profile and everyone is still yelling about it. Do I have to put it in my actual posts? Like THIS:

Yup.

You can add it to your signature line (just look around in the "User CP")

Frank Ben emailed me back today and told me a little more about his school.

Apparently they're doing more of a Vale Tudo/Shootfighting thing over there. Lots of sparring... no forms or any of that. He also throws in some Filipino stick and knife arts.

Well, that sounds FANTASTIC to me! I'm going to go check out his school as soon as I can.

If you are just looking for straight Muay Thai you might have to search not just schools but certificates. Up in Canada kickboxing/Muay thai boomed and now alot of schools added "and kickboxing" to the end of there club name, so shop around and if still trouble go to www.mikemiles.com and maybe drop that club an e-mail and they could direct you better.

Well, I'd posted around here and there about this same time last year, looking for a martial arts school here in Austin that would be geared towards what I would like to do: mixed martial arts, sparring-intensive, competition oriented, etc.

Intead of getting involved I decided to wait until I was ready. I did an evaluation of myself and decided that I just wasn't in the condition I wanted to be in. I immediately started a strength/endurance training routine that I have worked on for the past year, lifting weights at the gym and doing lots of running at Town Lake (12 miles per week or more).

Now I feel like I"m ready to get started. I've packed on a good bit of muscle, am twice as strong as before and have 10 times the endurance and stamina as before. So, again, I'm ready to find a school to get involved with.

I remember last time thinking that Frank Benn's school would be more of what I want. I know there are good BJJ schools in Austin, but I just have absolutely no interest in BJJ. I know... "Blasphemy!!".... but that's just my preference. BJJ isn't for everyone I guess.

So, is Frank's school still going strong? Anyone a student there? I'm also still interested in Ray Parra's school. I think these two are the ones I'll be checking out for sure.

Nice to be back :D

Checked out Frank Benn's class tonight:

Great guy and a great class! They don't do as much kicking as I'd like... it's mostly boxing and then lots of grappling. His students were very good when on the ground and I was quite impressed. Also, sparring is a very regular part of the program there and that definitely gives it big points.

Going to still look around at a few other schools.... Ray Parra's for sure.

Frank's class is looking great so far, though ;)
