View Full Version : favourite weapons?
mines are the jo staff and nunchukus (that how you spell it again?!) what about you guys?
Sticks and staves have so much applications, and there's usually something like that available anywhere... I'm not good with flexible weapons, but they are exellent for training: don't forgive any mistakes (easy to hurt myself with them :D ). Blades... a bit ambivalent attitude... don't have strong formal training to those.. and carrying them without proper reason is illegal around here..

Flashlight Fu, gotta love it...right up there with Bre'r Bear Fu!
I like sharp shiny objects with pointy bits, especially for practical stuff. I never see a stick lying around anymore, they just ain't there, so I do carry my own cane but my favorite knife is in my pocket.

In class, my favorite would be bo or jo (can't WAIT to start iado though).
On the street, I like a good solid blade (I still carry a Gerber Folding Hunter that I've had forever) backed up with a cane. All completely legal and aboveboard.
Beyond that, if necessary, Colt .45 and SPAS 12 ga. pump. Not all new and shiny and stuff, but they definitely will get the job done.

Cliff is a police officer. In the US, they carry those huge indestructable torches ("flashlights" in the states) which can double as clubs in a pinch.
They'll approach a car with the torch over their shoulder with teh lens facing out and examine the driver and contents of the car (this is at night, obviously) and the light beam helps them check if the driver is intoxicated (the eyes may not constrict properly if you're on drugs). if a whacked out nutcase jumps at you, you have the weapon in position already to club em before you get hurt. In any fight in teh dark, a quick blast of really bright light can disorient your enemy so they can be subdued with non-lethal methods as well.
Too much info? sorry.

Good answer. Practically all techs that can be done with short stick (baton) can be done with good, metallic flashlight.

oh i see. didja know that the police baton originated from the tonfa? i learned that from a book about martial art stories.

I love my Streamlight SL-20 flashlight.
I have hit people with an ASP expandable baton until my arm was tired and ended up putting it away and throwing punches. I have about a %100 one shot stop percentage with the flashlight and only one of those was an accidental head shot. Thigh, knees, shin, elbows, hand, even the torso. My flashlight is feared thoughout my city. I have even dropped a couple of officers with it (accidentally of course).

what happened to the kinder, gentler peace officers? :-)

I am so kind and gentle I make Barney look like a terrorist!
I only use the amount of force neccessary to effect an arrest and nothing more. There is a running joke at my department about me, if I have anything in my hand when the fight starts..get out of the way. I mean you hit five or six other cops accidentally over the years and they start getting scared. Bunch of big babies.
I am pushing 19 years now, so it seems that I have been involved in alot of stuff, but it's really not that much spaced out over the years.

I really was teasing. I know a cop or two (my cousin just made detective in the NYPD) so I know you guys are in harms way and basically get a bad rep for no good reason (and a few knuckleheads now and then).

Night and day the Z2-COMBATLIGHT--small,handy,powerful enough to momentarily blind, lanyard for chokes, etc etc. Lots of lumens.
My friend's life was saved on security patrol when attacked at night by a knife wielding thugess. He used the Z2.Did not have to use his gun. It can be used along with the gun.It is a favorite of the FBI also.
wow.. who knew such a humble thing could be such a lifesaver?
johenora
11-13-2003, 18:33
Dear Wulf:
That humble Z-2 Combat Flashlight costs only about $90.00 USA dollars and may be obtained on sale from www.deltapress.com
It has blinding light--about 120 Lumens--I believe. Correct me if I overstated the Lumens.
Further ,the Z-2 can be used as a Kubotan or hand held Shinobi with the lanyard around your thumb --so it can not be pulled out of your hand.
The other night I turned the Z-2 on in my parked car and it felt like daylight. I could see my map very clearly.
Cheers,
$90?!?! how much is that in british pounds?! (would a maglite torch be just as good...?)
johenora
11-14-2003, 17:06
Dear Wulf
I had previously used a mag lite, but is NOT as versatile.
Reason is the Z-2 has about 120 Lumens FLASH like a camera Flash Bulb and in the dark--the Z-2 instantaneously blinds the assailant and the assailant is Aikied because he/she thinks it is a regular flashlight.
Even if assailant gets savy the assailant must close the eyes mometairily --now you strike or to get behind the person to do lanyard strangle/Garrotte style etc.etc..There are two balls for shorteninig the landyard. Imperative you make two small knots at the end of each cord as not to loosen the ball shorteners. One ball will do havoc to the assailant's trachea.
The cords can be used to defend against a shellaylee stick etc . You could also convert the cords to banded wire, if you so desired.
Got the idea?
Last night to walk in the dark I used the ball and cords to do a wrap around my head with Z-2 hanging down to view and I had use of hands to work.Like a miner's lamp. Do you get my subtle point?
The lanyard held at the thumb British Commando style prevents person from pulling it out of the hand. It can be held next to your firearm for point and shoot--OSS --CIA style taught at the Farm by Col.Rex Applegate (Inventor Applegate covert knife) and my friend also the British Royal Marine Lt.Col. W.E. Fairbairn(Inventor Fairbairn-Sykes Knife) and hand-to-hand combat instructor.
It is like a small Kubotan for JiuJitsu releases etc--many uses too numerous to mention because of the metalic hurt ridges.
The convesion factor as to Dollars to British Pound Sterling is abou !.75 Lb to the US 1.00.
On internet order the catalog---but HURRY they are on sale and you save a few quid. I do not know mailing fees for over the pond. Other flashlights in the same Lumen range do not have the VERSATILITY factors and are super expensine like $200 plus and the Z-2 batteries last a long time. Kindly do the search on internet etc. I am certain you will like this magnificent piece of equipment.
I have not tested it on animals--domestic or wild but I suspect the white brite will do the trick. To not startle the aminal you would need to fabricate a red lense cover like on hunting lights.
Use your ingenuity for this innocuous and humble flashligt that has humility and not vanity. This is a modern Koryu device--HA!HA!
Do I get a finder's fee? HEE!HEE!
Say do you wish a group to sponsor me for a Seminar in Koryu or plain ole hand-to-hand combat--Marine Corps style.Be glad to visit you as I have been to Sterling and have a former MI-5 friend living in Falkirk--Mr. "Hoggan"--He and his wife and daughter have two precious cats

Dear Wulf:
Real Cool -----
Love the "0_0"
Several things I forgot to mention about the Z-2 Combat Flashlight made by Sure+Fire are as follows:
1.Now has the Lock-Out Tail Cap and provides 65 lumens for one hour. For added power get the P61 lamp assembly which will provide 120 lumens for 20 minutes. This assembly is sold seperately. "Lumen" means luminous flux. A lumen is the total amount of light emitted by a light source. Candlepower is the single brightest spot of an overall light source. Lumens are generally regarded as the most accurate indicator of a light's true power.
2.Has a unique body shape, switch system, and adjustable combat shooting grip which allows one to use the Rogers/Surefire or the Harris flashlight-assisted shooting technique.
3.Has the tailcap mounted switch that allows you to instantly trigger the light with pressure. It allows you to "light and move." Realeasing the tailcap operates as a "deadman's switch."
4.As to the Lock-Out with discernible notches in the tailcap,if rotated one full turn, the tailcap cannot be activated inadvertently.
5.Powered by two 3 volt lithium batteries with a 10 year self life.
6.Is 5.1 inches long and weighs 5 ounces.Comes only in the color black. It is ideal for plain clothes and detective work and many other tasks. Does not have a pocket clip, but a combat holster can be separetly obtained to carry the flashlight up or down for quick access. There is an assembly for adjusting the holster to fit different belt sizes.
Have a good week-end.

Incidently, I've got nice 10 pound extinguishers in both the kitchen and garage. Expensive metal-head rechargable ones, not the cheap Wal-Mart kind.

What do you carry as a favorite weapon when riding your German Motorcycle?
Cheers,

11-16-2003, 08:40
On the motorcycle I carry my Spyderco Delica copy in my pocket.
I do a lot of "stealth camping". This is camping in remote spots where camping really isn't allowed like in cemetaries, or behind truck stops, or in a farmer's field. See: http://www.lufkinscrc.org/john/nlaride0303
For those nights I have a machete I've cut down to 13" and squared off at the end. This makes it fit perfectly in my saddlebags. The square end keeps it from poking stuff while packed. I made a custom protective sheath to keep the edge from cutting stuff while packed. I keep it in the tent with me while I sleep.
My last fight was over three years ago. I got jumped by three bikers at a 1%'er get-together where I shouldn't have been in the first place.
When that altercation started I purposely unclipped my pocket knife and let it fall deep into my front pocket. I didn't want it skittering around on the pavement. I didn't want it to get taken away from me and used against me.
I wound up receiving a severe beating, but nobody got killed and I didn't have to spend tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees fighting a manslaughter charge.
1%'ers fight so frequently it's actually not a big deal to them. In other words, every altercation is not a life and death situation to them. I was fairly certain they wouldn't kill me.
A big part of carrying any weapon is being able to judge when the benefits of using it outweight the costs.

Justin:
If someone unsheaths a Katana,I am putting on my Yellow belt, track shoes and sky-rocketing out the store. You bet there would be a yellow streak up and down my back. Just like the fur on my Wolf's back if she would see a mountain lion.
Every diligent Marial Artist should learn the subtle art of running and fishing.
A U.S.M.C. strategic withdrawal would be in order. Some dude in Calfornia in a store pulled out a Katana recently and did kill and wound several people.
Keep your powder dry and stay focused.
Cheers,
The weapons that I prefer to use are the Tonfa's, the Kubotan and the Bo Staff. I don't know about anyone else but I think that the Kubotan is ace, a good way to restrain someone!!

And, dont you think it would b embarrising to actually get beat up with a fan?, thats really why i love them, because people alwase underestimate them. :t2:

"Army guys?" Bite your tongue, young lady! :D
Actually, a 'favorite' weapon is kind of hard to say. Each of mine has their own little combative niche, and I own literally a couple hundred weapons of various types. Then there's my sword, which is in a whole different category to me...
"You should not have a favourite weapon. To become over-familiar with one weapon is as much a fault as not knowing it sufficiently well." - Miyamoto Musashi , Go Rin No Sho
Favorite weapon,
Traditional : Spear & Sabre
Modern : berreta 9 mm made in Italy, Glock, AKA Rifle Klsnikov, shotgun etc etc, sniper rifle.
Traditional:
Bo, Nunchaku, Sai. In that order
Modern:
Wilson Combat KZ-45, Sniper rifle, M-4, M1A1 scout fitted with an Aimpoint sight, Glock. Not necessarily in that order but all at once.
my older brother got a couple of new weapons recently.. a pair of celtic shortswords (also known as the "iron tongues") and when i say celtic, i don't mean the football team!! he showed me how to do a sort of kata with them, "eight point star" i think it's called. anybody familiar with it?
Favorite Weapon(s):
Strong watchband,
robust long sleeved cuffs.
Good for Ezekiel chokes and can get through any and all metal detectors.
As for more serious weapons... AC-130.

Is there one of those flashlights that also incorporates an electro shocking component (tazer phase induction stun gun like device) on one end or the other?
Just curious.

I'm planning on buying an iron fan too! They just seem so cool. Too many cheesey Kung Fu movies as a kid. Plus the girl in Mortal Combat was cool too.
Anyhow my favorite weapon is the over cliche'd Katana, next would be a Tai Chi sword, Rapier, Saber, and so on...
Weapons I own, a smith and wesson folding knife, kukri (blade from Nepal, very mean looking, used to hack off limbs.) I'm planning on buying some more knives and swords, I'm a lover of sharp objects.
Forgot to add, I'd love to learn how to throw chopsticks effectively. The Chinese intelligence trained some agents to through chopsticks through glass. Ouch.

By far the best weapon you can have is your body and mind. Haha just alittle nerding for you. I think practical weapon like staffs or sticks are the most effictive bc when do you have a sword with you when your walking down the street. escrima sticks are prolly my favorite jsut bc u can find a substatute for them basically anywhere. traditional = katana
Modern = thumb to the eyes
I looked up the Z-2 Combat Flashlight and found it here...
http://www.uscav.com/productinfo.aspx?productid=5376&tabID=137
...does not look as handy to carry on account of the profile. And does it really require Lithium batteries, as described? Those things require special chargers and are not available just anywhere. Except for computers, where I don't have a choice, I try to avoid non-standard batteries. My MP3 player was selected largely with that as a criteria. My next camera will be likewise. Can't imagine going that route for, of all things, a flashlight.
Despite the cool strobe-flash advantage of the Z-2, a Maglite still seems sleeker and therefor handier for all-the-time carry.
Personally, I still prefer the cane. It does not look out-of-place in the daytime. The only disadvantage to date, if you can call it that, is when the kid behind the counter at my local carry-out pizza place insists on carrying my pizzas to the car for me.
DragonMind
12-12-2005, 11:08
Maglites are bulky and awkward to carry when you get one strong/large enough to use as an impact weapon. I also don't like the light they put out. I did pick up a Z-2 and really like most aspects of it. It fits the hand like a yawara and with the lanyard I can use it like a dan bong for swinging strikes and trapping as well. The profile is designed for shooters so that they can keep the light on target with their handgun in a good shooting position. You don't notice it if you grip like a palm stick. The case is aircraft aluminum and can take quite a pounding, where I've battered Maglites to junk with less impact. It works for me, YMMV.
I love my cane as well, but there are times it is impractical. My Z-2 fills in some of those gaps.
Lithium batteries are so prevalent today, I don't see them being any worse than alkaline. Their longer life and better power output more than make up for a small inconvenience (I have to buy them at Best Buy instead of WalMart) to me.

My favorite weapon? Probably the Joong Bong (Korean equivilant to the escrima) and the bo. Sticks are fairly easy to find if you know where to look. A broom stick is also very effective and is fairly easy to find. Break the head of the broom off and you basically have a spear because of the way the wood splinters.
Another weapon (well, it's not really a weapon. But it works in a pinch) that I have access to just about anywhere is my car keys. I have a small caribiner attached to the keys. I can run my index finger through the caribinner so I can use the keys like nunchucks.
But my all-time favorite weapon is my own feet. You can't beat a front snap kick to the groin.
