This is just a simple survey to see what everybodies favorite chinese martial arts weapon is.

Mine is the dao (preferably twin dao).

Though I'm sure the Dao is much prettier! I know she is friendlier.

Gunpowder! Exellent point, and one that I completely overlook! Ah, well, I guess I will have to stick to the friendlier and prettier dao. http://www.budoseek.net/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.budoseek.net/ubb/smilies/shoot.gif (what I imagine dao is about ready to do to us...)

Richard, I've always been told the most difficult weapon to learn was the three section staff. Would you agree or disagree and why? I vaguely remember hearing some tale about how the idea of the three section came into being, but probably just some fancified legend that made a good story. Any insight to this weapon would be appreciated.

I agree that the San Jie Gun, the three section staff, can be quite difficult to learn. However, I feel that the Jie Bian, steel whip, is much more difficult to learn, simply because, I feel, it is more dangerous to learn. Where a simple mistake with the san jie gun may break a bone, the same mistake with the jie bian may cripple or even kill. I have studied with both, and this is my simple observation. What are yours?

Since my training has been predominantly japanese and bagua the only Chinese art I practice, my chinese weapons play is limited to the bagua deer hook swords (sun moon, deer horn or mandarin duck knives)...

There doesn't seem to be many folks practicing with these precursors to the batlith...I only know one form and it doesn't seem to follow general bagua principles at all, oh well.

i really like swinging the nunchakus. granted, they probably are not the most lethal of weapons, but...don't count them out! i've been practicing a lot with wooden nunchakus and i'm becoming quite good. when they swing, i love it how they become graceful and powerful at the same time. they are great for building wrist strength. i don't know. there's just something about them i fell in love with. maybe it had something to do with the fact that they're fairly easy to conceal and legal in most states, but maybe not.
my second favorite weapon is the long-staff. i've been learning some nice practical strikes with the staff. you guys should too.

Hmmm favorite weapon...well taking out modern weapons I would want something for each range (short and long)spear and double broadsword.
I do 3 sectional...I think rope dart is harder...put spearheads on the 3 sectional.

My favourite weapon is the Taiji Jian.......not just because I am a total sword feind...but also in the way the sword is handled and used, the change of grip, the manner in which cuts are made, it is light and elegant, movements swift and precise......lovely

I like all weapons...Like the gunpowder comment, how about HOT TEA?or chopsticks?
I got a "Mulan" fan...silk with the extended fabric, fluttery edges for christmas, I haven't really seen or practiced any forms with it..but I can make a pretty large POP opening it up...
I like the whip chain and it does bite, but I have a piece of foam on the spear end right now for safety...I like to walk around with it tied on like a belt, then pull it off for use...
3 sectional staff=the weapon that can hit you in the head and shin at the same time...from experience!
I think Pudao/Kwan Do may be my next official forms weapon-not often used by women...but I am big...and the blade can be pretty loud(always a plus at KARATE based tournaments where they are always waiting for your KIA!)

my BIG tip for chain whip. Put some type of protective covering on the "spear" tip. My teacher has a small bottle on his practice one, I have a piece of flexible foam. I have hit myself in the nose and teeth enough to appreciate this.
otherwise...be patient and practice a lot is about all i can say. I am getting pretty accurate shooting off my foot, odd because I am not so good off arm wraps!?
good luck

Also saw a really cool form with double daggers a long time ago. Wish I had that one on tape.

Wow, this is a really good question. Of the weapons I've learned I'd have to say the Gim and The Pole are my favorite. But I have yet to learn a bunch and the ones I am really excited to learn are; Double Dagger, Double Hooked Saber, and Sun and Moon Double rings. The Cane/Baton looked really sweet too.

My favorite out of the ones i've learned is the Staff.I like the staff because alot of ppl don't respect the staff.Since it's usually the first weapon taught ppl don't take it serious.I also like the broadsword.

Of the weapons i have'nt learned by far it's the Chopsticks and Bowl form i have a video of my Sifu doing this form man i can't wait to learn it.Imagine fighting someone you have a Broadsword and they have Chopsticks and a Bowl.Sounds like a mismatch huh? you would be wrong if you think this. Also the War Cymballs is also awesome.

sean_stonehart

There are different names for different configurations... a Halberd is a "Chi". A double sided halberd is "Shuang Chi". There's also various knife bladed halberd like weapons... Guan Dao, Pu Dao, Da Dao, Yuan Yang Dao, etc....

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum.I wasnt going to post because this post was kinda old,but a good question. I do not study a chinese art right now, hoping to start Choy Lee Fut soon, but from th weapons that I would like to learn and intrest me most, the kwan dao, dao, staff and the straight sword, I think thats as cut down I can get it, but the most uniqe I would have to say is the Horse Bench, I never new about it untill I did some research on Choy Lee Fut. Not one that would be my favorite but deffinatly different and would be fun to learn. My number one favorite....Ill be able to hopfully answer in a couple of year when Im hopfully a almost good Martial Artist, and then I might have a better perspective of the weapons. :)
Thanks, Corey Hunter

It is, but there's a southern Chinese sabre called the Miao Dao (after the Miao people) that predates the modern katana & looks strikingly like a katana. You're cool here.

The 6' stick is par for China no matter the dialect, although they tended to not be so stuck on sizes. The Sai are found in Southern CMA from Fujian & Guangdong provences. A lot of the time, they're referred to as "tie cha" or "iron ruler".

Dave it is taught, but I think it's kind of obscure. I know there are a couple of modern wushu sets that have tried to preserve it. Here's one that kinda demonstrates how the Chinese view a long, thin single edged knife... :D

I would have to go with the Chain whip. A weapon that is totally concealable, and talk about effective! A man well versed in the chain whip is dangerous indeed. A man who is not is also very dangerous, but particularly to himself. I have not had a chance to train with one yet, as the system of Shao-lin I train in reserves this untill around your second year of training.

of weapons I have trained with I would definltey have to go with the Bo staff or spear.

Well yeah maybe...

Maybe you wanted something to help entangle clothing or weapon flags/ tassles when fighting so you might gain an advantage over your opponent...

Maybe you wanted something to help distract your opponent by making a lot of noise anytime you moved your weapon...

kwan kune
03-01-2005, 18:58
they would
1 catch on the opponents sword/weapon
2 you could attach red flags that served two purposes one is distraction when your eye sees red it focuses on it and two is they would soak up the blood

Maybe I am confused... but you just said that the 9 rings was heavier and less balanced, so wouldnt it require more strength and control to use and therefore build more muscle?

9 rings has poor balance dao has great balance and it is lighter, training with kwan dao builds muscle of incredible quality in a relatively short time

No.... it has the balance it's supposed to have when used the way it's meant to as opposed to a substitute for a weapon if a person isn't large enough to use the proper weapon for the proper set/function...

As far as muscle building, they both build muscles faster than empty hand training & they both will do it quickly by repetitive use. One builds more faster if used properly. The same one will injure you damn quick if used improperly.

My favorite Chinese weapon is Jian. Still struggling with it. It's the most complexed weapon I have ever train with. Still having difficulty getting some of the angles of my blade right when defending against my classmates attacks with their sword and me countering back properly. Using wood Jians of course. The amount of times I've gotten stabbed around my body and wrist cut several times with my classmate's wooden Jian I definitely would not like to get cut with a live steel Jian for sure. Tough weapon to train with and my mind is fried from concentrating so much after training paired drills with it for an hour.

i agree it is not a question of how good a weapon is it's which one each prefers and is more adaptable to it's style for example i like the guan dao and long staff and the dao sword because i'm better with longer stances, yet my friend prefers his nunchuks because he's shorter and prefers close quarters but i wouldn't bet on who who would win in a fight.

Dao the word literally means knife, the english simply refer to it as a broadsowrd simply because of the shape the way it broadens, although this confuses me because engligh broadswords are straight and don't bend.
