View Full Version : I really really want to practice Kali
Hello,
I've been doing some research on Kali and other Filipino stick fighting arts and have become quite interested in practicing it. Imagine my frustration when i searched for a school in Puerto Rico, where I live, and found none. Nothing! Nada!! So I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out if you know any schools in P.R., especially near San Juan, that teach Kali or a related martial arts(as in stick fighting) If not then please recommend a good book or video from which i can start. Thx in advance

sorry I don't have any help for as I live in IL but, are you a kenshin fan? If so then you have a friend on this board,me!
I've done kali, and sword fighting, kendo and gumdo. Why exactly do you want to study kali? I mean, it's a great art, but waht are your personal reasons?
Hi!
Turns out I am a Kenshin fan, he rules!. I don't know if i can explain why i want to practice Kali. I've always liked martial arts and even more sword arts and staffs. Kali just seems like a combination of both and a really cool art. As for why i want to study martial arts, for fun, but also to grow stronger, to help others to be able to defend myself.

If you are already an Instructor in an Art, you can participate in our Aprendis (Instructor Trainee) Program.
Please let me know if you would like to participate.
Salamat Po!

hi, if you want to study kali or arnis, you have to be proficient in handling the sticks. the way i see it, you have to practice moves and strikes and katas and live and sleep with sticks. play with them a lot. i think the disarming and strikes as well as the footwork and blocks will follow later. rattan is good, also ironwood but it is rare. if there is no training place for arnis/kali in your area. i hope this helps. best wishes from the philippines, s.

Thank you Ms. Fuentes.
Please remember to sign your name also after your post.
Salamat!
Ruroni,
I'm originally form P.R. myself and I have a friend that studies Kali, in Aguadilla, he mentioned to me that his instructor was looking into opening a small "Sala de Clases" in San Juan, close to San Patricio Plaza. I'll ask him if he ever succeeded and write you back with a response.

Look up Rico Cortes. He teaches a number of police agencies in PR. Rico is a student of Ray Dionaldo and a very talented teacher.
Pipo Lopez is also in PR and is one of Ray's. You can contact him through http://fcskali.tripod.com/id7.html
