before I started training I was pretty unfit, lacking in flexibility and poorly balanced and coordinated......since training in taijiquan I have legs like tree trunks and can balance quickly holding single leg stances easily.....a while training in TSD gave me some speed, and accuracy......and I can go through form, balanced and at speed.....so why oh why when I am not in the training room do I fall off steps, go over my ankes when walking on level ground and walk into door frames instead of the space.....I open doors into my face...I have broken a pair of glasses this way......luckily I can reverse park the car into a small space (s long as there is no PMT involved  ) is it just me or are there any other Mr Bean impersonators out there??? :o

LOL!
Don't feel bad Mandeigh, blame your mother, at least I do.

It is an inherited thing. My mom is a clutz just like I am. I remember countless times where she has stubbed her toe, tripped without there being anything to trip on and slammed herself into doorways which were wide open for her to walk through. Alas I am inflicted with the same problem and have two daughters that are suffering the same fate of uncoordination as me. :p

I can balance teacups on my knees in a horse stance, I can successfully run a gauntlet of my peers for multiple strike exercises, I can maintain a crane stance for long periods of time and extend my leg slowly for stretching, and I can catch a fly in my hand from a sitting position (Okay, it only happened once two years ago but it made me feel really cool). I cannot walk down the hallway of my home without stumping my big toe on the same corner multiple times, I can't sit at my desk at work without kneecapping myself at least once a day, and I apparently cannot figure out which way the big glass doors at my office open after working here for 3 years. (I start almost every day pushing on a glass door that clearly says PULL right next to the handle. My only defense is that I haven't had any coffee yet. I need to start wearing a "school for the gifted" t-shirt like the farside cartoon.) Apparently I am destined to be big and goofy for the rest of my life so I may as well enjoy it. :D

LOL!! I thought it was just me!! Great and unbelievably true thread!!
Coming from Hapkido, I can do the greatest arials imaginable, I can fly dozens of feet through the air and safely extend and roll out to the delight of one and all-JK- but I can't walk through a mud puddle and remain upright!! What is that all about? Let's not even get on the reflexes issue, jeesh!! I break a dish, spill a drink, burn myself, etc..at least 2-3 days a week! What a relief to find out others have the same problems. Thank you for starting this thread!

LOL, I've been accused of this - "Leon, you do all that martial arts and still you have no balance or coordination!" as i tumble down stairs, trip over things, walk into doorframes, try and lean of something, miss it, and whack my chin.

Mandeigh, your problem is obvious. Either too much, or not enough Guinness. As everyone from the Isles knows, Guinness cures EVERYTHING :-)

So true.
Where is the function that allows me to award this thread 5 stars?

I can say that I am as coordinated and balanced in the dojo as I am outside. (Snigger snigger  )

However... there was one time when I was running out from a bar into the carpark to put a jacket away when I tripped over a kerb (situated between parked cars, stupid design of spaces!).

I didn't have time to react to do a full mae ukemi (forward roll) but did a half roll instead, rolled out from my stack and carried on running.

To passers by, it must have been a strange sight.

My balance is horrible. We once had this big blue exercise ball (bob) that I had to workout on. Well I kept falling off and doing face plants. The next day a 10 year old girl knew about this and she took bob and bounced on him right in front of me and she had this superior look on her face. :(

NExt time it happens, just tell everyone you practice Drunken Kung Fu.

Guys, your missing the opportunity going on around you. So you slip and fall. You practice ukemi and impress people with your falling skills. Smash your face into the door. Just don't show pain, say I meant to do that, witness my self control. Drop something, well your telekinetic powers are off today. Besides now you can impress them by standing on one leg, bending over to pick it up, then pivot and kiai for good measure. These are the signs of a MA master, like opening doors with a front kick, cleaning the floor with foot sweeps and activating wall switches with finger jabs.

Peace
Dennis

Don, you gotta let go man and face that truth... the 10 year old WAS superior when it came to bouncing on Bob :p

Well, i'm the intelligent person who stubbed her toe on the same chair every night for a few weeks before I moved the chair out of the way. Not much else to say about it.
