Aight I have 3 questions,

1) First off, KEN LO, the guy who beats the hell out of jackie chan with One Leg at the end of drunken master, well ive been practicin his footwork, ive studied and studied it, and im good with kicks, my flexibility is high, im 6'4, and my toes can hit just about 8 ft high in the air in a jumping front snap kick, if any of you have ANY knowledge of extreme kicking exercises, like your most advanced ones you know, let me know, becuz im sure there is always effective height, speed, and flexibilty exercises for my kicks I dont know and should do every other day with my other exercises....

2) This is a odd question but alot of you prob know it, In the first Mortal Combat Movie, like I used to love it when i was young and I busted it out of the closet last night for good times, and I notcied that, well im not sure and heres my question but, Scorpion, Sub zero, and Reptile, you the know the Ninjas with the pretty color Costumes, well it looks like they ALL use tae kwan do, because they use the exact same blocks I know, and all the tae kwan do kicks, just makin sure they are using that alone?

3) Whats the best way to block a Side kick aimed at your head, cuz my good buddy whos a blackbelt, First Dan, did a sidekick to my head last week and knocked me out, besides dodging it, its so hard to block a fast strrrrong one like his, ive grabbed his leg once and trip kicked his one planted leg on tha ground, but that doesent work anymore he has just got to fast, my only advantage over him is im 6'4 ft tall and hes 5'9 , so I have way longer reach so i can keep him back with really fast roundhouses and crescent combos, but hes so good with those damn high sidekicks....sparring can be a b**ch...

I WOULD REALLY appreciate it if you could answer those 3 it means alot, thanx guys, this site kicks a$$ im glad I joined

1) I dunno who Ken Lo is
2) I doubt they do TKD kicks. Most kicks are the same in every martial art system. TKD kicks are generally jump spinning kicks. And most blocks are the same in Karate and Tae Kwon DO and Tang Soo Do.
3) Just block the kick with a middle block. Or spin as he kicks so you dodge it.

Finally if you want to be a member of this great site you must sign your name with every post. And why did you make 2 different threads with the same topic in it.

it is a movie...

ok, how about a suggestion to the mods.

Why not add a "performance arts" section to the forum for those wanting to discuss fancy kicking, stunts, tricks and wire work?

Never said he did, but that doesn't change that what he does is performance art, not real fighting. It's very impressive, wish I could do it, but like a impressive figure skating manuver, not got much to do with fighting.

First off, Zeus, moderator duties.

YOU agreed when YOU joined the board to put your real, full name on all posts. It is an issue of living up to your obligation. This is your second reminder.

As to your questions: most movie martial arts are based heavily on TKD because it looks good on screen. To quote Bruce Lee, "Before the invention of television no martial artist kicked above the knee."

As a tactic, you can jam almost any kick by simply moving in, preferably leading with your hip. It's effective enough that it is forbidden in most schools that rely heavily on kicks.

Above the knee? Really? I would have figured the solar plexus would be as high as kicks would go.

Now, with the tactic, is that moving in during the kick or before it comes?

Seen it a few times, very fancy, not good for anything but show though.

"Ken Lo doesent use wires..."
I hate to burst your bubble, but the segment where he stops and lifts his sidekick to the complete vertical, he did use wires. It's a pretty standard move in hong kong action. And his form is great for movies, sloppy for fighting. He most likely has awesome fighting form, but that's not what he was showing in that movie.
If you like that kind of scene, check out Jackie Chan's "Who am I." There's a similar kicking scene on a rooftop near the end. (incidentally, they use the same wire-sidekick trick there too! :wink2: )

If you prevent the kick from being launched, you have stopped it at its weakest point. Instead of reacting to your opponent, anticipate his moves and stop them as they start. Every kick starts with some shift of the body, learn to recognize them and it becomes easy to neutralize a kicker.

Good stuff, Barry, thanks a lot. I have to remember this when I start sparring.
