Well, there are many different styles of Kempo/Kenpo out there. Which one was he talking about?? I've been training in Kenpo (EPAK) for 17yrs and IMO, its great! I also do a few other arts to supplement the Kenpo training.

Like all martial arts, everything has its strong points and weak points. I've actually trained in the Villari system as well as Parker. The Parker system IMO offers more of a wide array of techs. and extensions of them. It includes many checks as well as different ways to cancel out your opps. height, width and depth.

The Villari system did not cover all of these types of attacks on a regular basis. They were taught at different periods through out the classes. Pretty much, if you weren't there, you missed out on it! Yet, those same techs. were still required for rank advancement.

The Parker system covers attacks in close as well as from more of a distance. The one thing that it lacks IMO, is a more solid understanding of the ground. Not saying that it does not address ground techs. or attacks, such as a tackle, but more if you do get taken to the ground. The one good thing about a good portion of the techs. is that you can apply them to the horizonal position as well. I've actually applied a few Kenpo techs. during my grappling training. However, if you really want to feel comfortable there, you should have a good idea of what its like to be there. That is one of the reasons I crosstrain in BJJ.

I hope that this was a help to you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Again, there are many different styles of Kenpo/Kempo. Each has their own unique thing about them.
